Silly question.....is the portion sizes on food for when its cooked or as it is in the package? I just measured out 85g of pasta raw, but it doesnt say on the bag if that is cooked or raw.

Please help!

    bump...great question!
  • lots of threads on this....pasta is best measured uncooked - depending on how long you cook it, it absorbs more water and thus weighs more.

Pasta is typically measured dry, and the usual dry serving is 2 ounces. Depending on how long you cook it and the shape of the pasta, 2 oz dry can be anywhere between .5 cups and slightly over 1 cup when prepared.

When a product is meant to be measured after cooking, the nutrition info will say "as prepared". Usually there will be two columns in the Nutrition label--one for the product dry and another under the heading "as prepared".

It believe it is 2oz for a serving and it's very small, on a plate it would flat about width of a softball.

Check to see how many servings the entire package is and compare it to that. If serving size is 2 oz and number of servings is 4 and the front of the package says it's an 8 oz box then each serving should be dry pasta. :-)
