Hey everyone! Tonight I am going out to a Japanese restaurant w/ some family and I have NO IDEA what to eat. I'm not familiar w/ Japanese food at all, and I want to make sure that I make a healthy choice. I'm also a pretty picky eater, so I'm a little nervous about trying some of the things. The idea of sushi kind grosses me out. Any input would be great! Thanks!!

I don't like sushi either, but maybe they would have baked fish instead?
This is a very healthy meal,
Japanese cuisine is rich in rish if I remember correctly.0 -
Our Japanese places are Hibachi grills where they cook the food in front of you. You can have vegetables and shrimp or some type of chicken. The portions are usually huge so you might have to take some home.
Now I'm craving Japanese Food!!! :grumble:0 -
If it's truly a Japanese restaurant (and not a sushi house) you will have plenty of likable options. Most Japanese places will have a "Hibachi Plate", which is basically grilled steak/chicken or seafood with rice and steamed veggies - total comfort food for most anyone. Vegetarians will always have a tofu/veggie dish, too.
While I do like sushi, I generally have just a couple of pieces and order a regular meal. I really like sukiyaki, which is thinly sliced beef simmered with vegetables (cabbage, mushrooms, scallions, etc) and noodles in a savory light sauce. It's very tasty! Most places also have several seafood dishes served over rice or noodles with steamed veggies; also a great choice. If you want to try some sushi have the group get a sushi roll instead of just the sushi; easier for most people and tastier. I love the Philly and Spicy Tuna rolls but most are good as they blend the sushi with rice and various extras(avacado, cream cheese, scallions, capers, etc) for a mix of flavors.
Here a link to a local chain, take a look at the menu for ideas:

Don't worry, lost of options for you in store. Just make sure they seat you at a table and not at the sushi bar. Enjoy......Mike0 -
Have a bowl of the miso soup and a bowl of salad with the ginger dressing.
Ease into sushi flavors with california rolls (there is no uncooked ingredients in these)
dipped in soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi.
Before you know it...you will probably become a fan of sushi.

Thanks everybody!! Sounds like I'm going to have plenty of options. I'll probably stick with something simple...but if the group decides to get some sushi I might try it...mabye :ohwell:0

A good way of easing into sushi is with the vegetable rolls..I LOVE the cucumber rolls this time of year and the avocado rolls are great too. Just rice and veggies, no fish or even crab.0
