I bought a new hrm, and it says "water resistant up to 50m" does that mean I can go swimming with it?...

Yes, but I wouldn't push any buttons while it is wet or while you are wet. I read that somewhere in a comment board on HRMs. Have fun!

I don't risk my gear unless it says water PROOF.

Rust resistant stuff still rusts it just takes longer, water resistant means if I forget to take my watch off while washing my hands it should be ok, barring washing in the stream from a firehose or something :P

Definitely don't swim with it. Pandorian is right. Unless it actually says it's waterproof, then it's not safe to wear underwater. It might be okay if it gets wet or submerged under the water for a few seconds, but after a few minutes underwater, the water will seep in and damage the electronics.

Also, most heart rate monitors can't transmit a signal while under water, unless you're using certain models made by Polar. It's due to the radio frequency that most monitors use.

 The others are probably right. I always just assumed 50m meant it is safe underwater. But then again, a HRM is different than a regular watch. I agree with the others.
