I dont know much about it. I use metamucil or fibercon daily and add a little more when I eat foods that I know bind me.0

Miralax as a last ditch, but try prunes, yummy and all natural.0

Lactulose is a prescription-only product (at least in the US) and is really more for chronic constipation rather that "bouts" of it. It works by pulling water out of the body and into the colon.
Make sure you're drinking enough water, and I might suggest a fiber laxative rather than something as drastic as lactulose. I'm not sure a doctor would prescribe it for "bouts" of constipation either.0 -
Lactulose is an ideal way to handle chronic constipation. It is an indigestible sugar which the normal bacteria in your intestine just love to consume. The byproducts of their metabolism increase intestinal activity, increases gas and flatulence and draws fluid retention. All of these features end up increasing the number and frequency of bowel movements without upsetting the normal electrolyte balance of your body as can other laxatives. You can take it for decades without harm and it is safe to use even for children, senior citizens and diabetics. It's best to take lactulose in the morning along with bran. The bran will expand in the gut because of the liquid drawn into it and add to effectiveness. I would start with just one tablespoon (15 ml.) and then every three days increase the dosage by one teaspoon (5 ml.). Keep on doing this until you literally explode every day with a bowel movement that is absolutely impossible to ignore and avoid. You'll keep regular. You won't gain weight and you will have a very healthy intestinal process that will improve your health and give you plenty of energy.0

If you're in the UK you can buy it over the pharmacy counter. Be sure to talk to your pharmacist! When I took it, I was told to keep the dosages level and at all costs to avoid bran! So it is worth speaking to someone medical about it first. Re calories, I don't know. It is syrupy. It usually takes 2-3 days to work.0
