Water aerobics...

I've been doing water aerobics for 2 days/week and am in my 3rd week. It seems too easy for me. Am I really getting a workout? My heart rate gets up for about 30 minutes and the other 30 is spent on the wall...should I find another class? There's a class starting in May...Aqua Zumba. Maybe this is a workout I need? Any thoughts, ideas or pointers on water aerobics or aqua zumba?

I love the Aqua Zumba. I found it was a much better workout.
  • I would ask your teacher. I'm sure he/she will be able to advise you on things to do to make it tougher for you :)

Every water aerobics instructor is different. When I teach my class it is more cardio, but the morning instructors have to teach at a different level for the demographic of their class. You should shop around for an instructor you like. Trust me you can get a great wrokout in the water but you have to have an instructor who can keep the moves going to give you that workout. It took me a while to figure out how to give a class that was intense enough for me to feel it and I am lucky enough to have a demegraphic in my aqua classes that can perform to that level.

So my advice is to shop around for instructors : ) Also don't just try one class and decide it isn't enough. If you try a couple from that instructor you might find that for some reason the energy just wasn't there that day but normally they bring it. If after a coupld classes you don't feel it's enough move on... I also suggest talking to the instructor and giving them feedback but do it in a way that doesn't seem like you are attacking their style because like I said everyone has their style and some take it personal.

Aqua zumba didn't feel like much of a workout to me but I want to try it again with aqua shoes this time (plus I want to get certified so I better take it!) If you have some good shoes it might help with keeping your feet on the ground.

    OMG, I want Aqua Zumba!!

There are things you can do to make any aqua class more challenging, such as webbed gloves that increase resistance. Does your pool have deep water aerobics? That will do something to you and if it ever becomes not challenging, you just take off the floaty belt to kick it up a level.

I would definitely try the aqua Zumba class, that sounds like a lot of fun! Also, you should check out aqua jogging you're really into water-based workouts. It's best done in 7+ ft deep water, but you can do it in chest deep water too. Water jogging is an intense but low impact way to get your heart rate going, AND you will definitely feel it after you get out of the pool. And like bethanna said, I would talk to your instructor about maybe upping the difficulty for the class, or maybe even just for you.

Even if they club doesn't offer deep water you can always go to the deep end and do the same thing as the class.. I have people who go to the deep end with belts all the time but since the club doesn't have belts they have to bring their own.
