Back Bends?

One of my goals is to be able to do a back bend again. Not from standing up but from laying on the ground and pushing myself up. At least that is my goal for now. I can get my butt off the ground but not my shoulders. I started working on doing push ups today as a way to strengthen my upper body, but are their other suggestions? I do not have access to a gym and am trying to learn to work out with very minimal equipment. Any help would be appreciated.
