Walking with weights

My wife and I just bought some weights because we were told that will tone us as we walk. We were wondering if we should keep using the same walking exercise when logging our walks or does walking with weights burn more. And if so which one should us start using for logging?

Thats a very good question. I also walk with weights but I've never thought about it burning more. I'm just trying to tone my arms.0

I walk with weights and I know that it burns more but I couldn't tell ya how much! I would prob leave it where it is because I think that mfp aims high for some of the exercises listed!!!0

maybe by comparing with and without using a heart rate monitor?0

I know when I use my weighted vest or ankle weights for a workout I tend to have a more intense burn both in my muscles and cardiovascular wise.. I do a HIIT routine in the gym but I don't see why you wouldn't have the same effect while walking with weights.. more weight more burn?? I haven't tried my workout with and without a HRM to check the results.. I will do that tonight and let you in on the results!0

walking with weights is good, as long as they are not too heavy. I havent measured the difference in calorie burn myself but with a hrm it would be fairly easy to do! Even if there is no difference in the hrm you are getting the "added bonus" of an upper body workout with toning, and sometimes that isnt loggable, but WILL COUNT when it comes to your overall health and vitality, building strength, plus may help with weight loss.
I wouldnt recommend running with weights though. A top Australian running coach (Brian Schepisi) suggests that running with dumbells will alter your form, which may make you run slower and lead to injury. I have usually run with one water bottle in my hand, and I know for a fact that when I dont run with water I run better and get a better time, I just need to plan a route with water bubblers on the way!0
