How much water should I be drinking?
Debbie Shelkey-Lawson & Sonya Lopez

The answer is, "it depends."

The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 100 ounces (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 75 ounces (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day. Even apart from the above approaches, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or slightly yellow, your fluid intake is probably adequate.

When you exercise, there are additional guidelines that are helpful:

1.Monitor your weight before and after a training session to evaluate how much fluid is lost; develop a plan to drink during activity and replace fluids after exercise to maximize performance and minimize chances of under or over-hydration. (If you weigh more after exercise than before activity, you are probably drinking too much.)
2.Before exercise, drink 4-5 ounces of water for each 50 pounds of body weight–ideally 4 hours before exercise to give your body a chance to excrete the excess water as urine. For a 125-pound athlete, that's 1-1.5 cups of fluid and for 160-pound athlete, that's 1.5-2 cups of fluid.
3.During exercise, sip fluids during the event and drink to thirst. Water poured over the head may feel good but it doesn't prevent dehydration. Avoid dehydrating to more than 2 percent body weight to perform at your best and stay healthy.
4.After exercise, drink 50 ounces for every 2 pounds of body weight lost.

drink the water! these guidelines seem like they are for athletes...most of the people on here are not. Easy equation:

    Body weight(divide in half)=drink that many ounces/daily

So mine is 194lbs (half being 97) 97 ounces a day. Thats a little over 12 cups a day. If you are exercising a lot, drink a cup of water extra and if you drink alcohol drink 2 glasses for every drink.

I didn't think so - but I was a bit worried I was sabotaging my efforts because I drink ALOT of water! I usually drink 32 oz before I even get to work, then I drink water all day at work, another 32 oz on my way home and 32 oz while I'm working out.
