MFP burn calculations vs HRM?

I have a Polar F6 and I've been using it for a long time now but really have never figured the whole thing out. I've read things about an o2 sensor or something for accurate readings and I don't even know what that is. So I'm wondering if I'm getting an accurate count on my HRM because the burn that MFP is showing for the amount of time I'm working out, is quite a bit higher than what my HRM is showing. For example, today I did Ripped in 30 which I log as circuit training and for 33 minutes on MFP it's showing 301 burned but my HRM is showing 245. Does anyone know anything about these things and can you give me any feedback on them? I'd appreciate any info! Thanks!!

  • I'd go with what your HRM says... its' the most accurate.

You're HRM is the most accurate. Go with what it says.

I would go with your HRM. The MFP calculations are generalized, and don't take a lot of things into account, such as room temperature, your physical abilities, etc.

if you have set the HRM with correct age sex height and weight then it will be more accurate.
now the bad news you are of course subtracting the BRM calories from your exercise calories :-)

I bought me a Polar 2 weeks ago and yesterday for the first time ever...my HRM and MFP said the exact same thing for cals burned in my Zumba class...i was shocked....ususally my HRM shows more cals burned than MFP....b4 my Polart FT4 I had a Sportline Duo and it to always read more cals burned than MFP...but I would go with my HRM at all times...

yep MFP only has basic guidelines which a lot of people think are overestimated (myself included). Only your HRM is gonna know exactly how hard you worked during a particular routine.

I always use my HRM to record my calories rather than MFP. I have started wearing it whenever I do any exercises including strength training, yoga, etc.

I dont go thru the hassels of subtracting BMR cals from my HRN numbers...thats a bit extreme to me...if I burned it for the hour no matter where it came from...thats what I'm logging!!!

Go with the Heart Rate Monitor... Mine, while sad generally says I burn about half of what MFP says I burn... ( I knew they estimated way high but didnt know it was THAT high) If you go to Polar's website they have a chat option for free where you can talk to a customer service representative about questions you have for your heart rate monitor... I've had to use it a couple times and it really helped!

MFP says 30 minutes of elliptical for me is like 600 calories burned, but the HRM says 450. I'd definitely go with the HRM that actually feels your pulse over a website that's just guessing.
  • Ok sounds good. HRM it is! I figured it was the most accurate, just wasn't sure if I had everything programmed correctly on my HRM. Now when you talk about subtracting something or other from something or other, you completely lost me! I think I'll stick with what I'm doing. I've always logged as what my HRM has said so I should be good to go. THanks for all the responses!
