Hello,

So, I purchased a device to track my calories burned, steps taken, heart rate etc.....

I kept track of how many calories it said I burnt and what the treadmill said that I burnt and they don't match....

Treadmill said 317 calories burnt
Device said 192 calories burnt

Which one is right??? And why such a difference??

Can anyone help me with these questions?

Thank you!

Typically your HRM will be more accurate. It is not based on an average weight or height, or a specific gender. Your HRM is based on the information you give it--your gender, age, height, weight. I have consistently read that the machines will over estimate your calorie burn by as much as 50%. Partly, this is a function of the averages used to create the formulas which give you the number. Partly, it is also a marketing function. People will buy machines they believe give them a better calorie burn.

If the device is a HRM, it probably asked you for some personal details like age, weight, height, etc, correct? If it was set up properly it will probably be the most accurate.

My HRM is low compared to the machines at the gym and MFP and I don't get it either. The machines at my gym even sync to my HRM and they show the same heart rate so I have no idea why the calories are off by so much. I just go with the lower number to be safe because I eat all or most of my exercise calories.
