Bizarre Porn Raid Underscores Wi-Fi Privacy Risks

Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of 'pedophile!' and 'pornographer!' stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn't need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents. That new wireless router. He'd gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought. Sure enough, that was the case. Law enforcement officials say the case is a cautionary tale. Their advice: Password-protect your wireless router."

I have told 2 of my neighbors to protect their networks.

Wowz so if someone aroudn you is using your network and they are looking into things illegal thennnn the cops show up to the registered routers owner? Hmm...would think they have ways to determine this since i mean..with wifi like everywhereee should know how to determine which computer its coming from ip address or something...i guess thats how the owner of the router got out of charges? or by looking into his computer once it was confinscated?

Exactly. Using a router, you show only 1 external IP address regardless of how many computers are on your network. So they traced the downloads back to his house. Most likely after forensic analysis they determined it wasn't on his computer, so they assume it was someone else using his connection.

I used to get into my neighbors routers (thank you for leaving your default password) and would change their router password, channel and security level for them. They never knew... Well maybe they did if they actually needed to get into their router.

I am not above learning to crack my neighbor's WEP encryption...you know just for science.
