My cupboards are looking pretty bare so I plan to go grocery shopping today or tomorrow. I have no clue what to get though. So far, I have been eating yogurt, cheerios, and Subway a lot. I would like to start packing my lunch to take to work but am in need of suggestions as to what makes a good, low calorie lunch. What are some of your go to healthy foods?

I always stock up on fruits, veggies, lunch meat-usually turkey, protein bars, chicken, and sometimes I buy the Lean Cuisine meals, probably not the best for you, but they are quick and easy and low calorie0

I generally try and make extra dinner so I have lunch. I also make a big pot of some sort of beans everyother week to eat for lunchs. Keeps me full and loaded with proteins and nutrients.
Fruits, veggies, good bread, and cheese sticks.0 -
Lots of salad fixings with turkey or chicken. I add cranberries and cheese cubes to my salad.
Salmon is also good. I bake fresh salmon for supper and then enjoy the next day at lunch. Good luck!0 -
I like carbmaster yogurt, Zone bars, Sara Lee 45 Calorie whole wheat bread, turkey breast slices, turkey bacon, cage free eggs, blueberries, strawberries, bear naked fit granola, ground turkey, tuna, low fat cheese, mini babybel light cheese, cheese wedges(35 calories), peter pan whipped peanut butter (1/3 less fat), bananas, baby carrots, green giant steam vegetables (the ones without the sauce).
Hope this helps!0 -
My husband and I just found by the deli these "Joseph's Lavash bread" and they also have pitas. The bread iss 100 calories for the whole thing and the pita I think is 60. It may work to make a wrap or a pita sandwhich.
Also i really like arnolds sandwich thins,
Good luck!0 -
oh i forgot, Tilapia, and sweet potato fries (when Im craving real fries. they are only 170 calories for 30 fries!!!)0

Pita's or tortillias so that you can have a pita or wrap. Stuff those with fresh veggies, some lean meats, vinager dressings (low cal) a bit of cheese and you have a filling and satisfying meal.
Bok Choy is also a great veggie to try, great and easy to cook. Toss that in a pasta or soup and you increase the fibre without the taste of spinach (it is a more buttery flavour). Yummmmm
I do pasta - pre cook the night before or a couple days before for dinner. Always adding the veggies, whole wheat pasta, tomato sauce or lite cream cheese goes a long way - filling, warm and easy to take with you.
Snacks are a must - fresh veggies are a great idea, I would suggest though, pre cutting them at the beginning of the week so that they are easy to grab (no excuses that way - doesn't take any time to chop the day of). With a little avacado or lite ranch dip. Granola bars, fruit to go, LOADS of water (often when we think we are hungry we are actually dehydrated - why not satisfy our feelings free of calories). Fresh fruit!
Just a few suggestions LoL0 -
We buy chicken breast on Sunday, then make chicken salad with fat free mayo. Then we can make sandwiches during the week w/ pepperidge farm low fat bread. Also ruffles low fat chips, pickles, low fat vanilla yogurt w/ frozen berries.Multigrain cheerios, berry kix, skim milk, low fat string cheese. Fruit & veggies of course, dipped in peanut butter or fat free italian dressing. For snacks we like pretzels, fiber one 90 calories bars, grapes. Smuckers preserves for toast. We drink only crystal light & water or Trop50 orange juice. Egg whites, & morning star sausage for breakfast.
Good Luck!0 -
I sometimes still have trouble with this too...0

i certainly am not trying to come off preachy, but let me say that first. also, as a disclaimer, it definitely depends if you follow a high protein, low carb, low fat, natural, etc train of thought. my first instinct though was to tell you to cut out subway/deli meats. i've heard horror stories of what goes on with the food at subway, and even though it's marketed as a smart choice, in my opinion it's far from. deli meats are so processed and full of junk, they make me sick to think about. i know lunchmeat is a super easy option, but IMO it is no where near a replacement for the real thing! (turkey slices vs. turkey breast)
that being said, I like to stock up on unsweetened almond milk, plain greek yogurt, frozen berries and veggies, lean meats and seafood, couscous/quinoa, oranges, pears, etc. i have been trying hard to eat more unprocessed foods (and I have to admit, I am feeling fantastic).0 -
Thanks for the suggestions lipt8611. First I'd like to share that is very rare that I actually eat meat from Subway. My husband is a vegetarian so we usually spilt a veggie sandwich without cheese. I actually am not a huge fan of deli meat. Like you, I know that it does have tons of junk in it. I actually don't eat much meat in general, and I guess I should have mentioned that in my post. If i do eat meat it's usually only ground turkey or chicken, never do I eat red meat or pork. Thank yo though for all your suggestions, I am looking forward to keeping them in mind when I go grocery shopping.0
