I have a big family birthday at the weekend and would like to have a drink when I'm there. Anyone got any advice on what's best to drink to avoid hurting a diet too much??? (I can't stand vodka). I exercise every day and am upping that and my water intake before and after the event to try to minimise any lingering of these calories.
Advice would be muchly appreciated
Thanks xx

It depends what you like.... spirits mixed with plain soda water are probably least calories, but they may not be your cup of tea. For example, tequila and soda water is about 68 calories, add some fresh lime for extra taste.
Or decide ahead of time how much you want to drink (say 2 glasses of wine, about 240 cals) and drink them slowly with a glass of plain mineral water between.0 -
I'd say a rum and diet coke, or PC Diet-Soda with Vodka. I know you said you don't like it, but the diet soda taste (of your choice) will completely cover up any of the vodka taste.... Absolute is my pick :-)
I've tried the low-calorie beers available in Canada, but they are crap; taste like water.
Another great drink is the 90-calorie Mike's Light Hard Lemonade's....0 -
water with a twist of lemon or lime. Everything else is just empty calories, and you can tell your friends it's a gin and tonic. Good luck and have fun!0

The issue with alcohol is not so much about the calories but what it does to your metabolism...it SLOWS it down. So with that said, if you HAVE to have a drink, go for drinks with less carbs and lower calories. Here are some choices:
Carb Counts – Beer – Per 12 Ounce Serving
Regular Beer: average is about 12 grams carb
Light Beer: check the label –- most are 3 to 7 grams
Ale: most are 5 to 9 grams
Stout: variable –- about 20 grams
Carb Counts – Wine – per 5 Ounce Serving
Dry Champagne: ~2.5 to 4.5 grams
Dry White (e.g. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay): ~3 grams
”Off Dry” (e.g. Reisling, Chenin Blanc): ~5 to 6 grams
Muscat:~8 grams
Dry Red (e.g. Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sav.): ~3.5 to 4 grams
Zinfindel: 4.2 grams
Dessert Wines: 12 to 14 grams
Sweet Late Harvest Wine: 20 grams
Carb Counts – Liqueurs – per jigger = 1.5 fl oz
Amaretto: 25 grams
Bailey’s Irish Cream: 11 grams0 -

What they said! The only reason I'm saying this is because alcohol lowers inhibitions. You have one or 2 drinks, then maybe a 3rd is o.k., and oh heck, I've already gone over, so maybe I'll have another. And, WOW ... that cake/appetizer looks kind of yummy, maybe I'll just have a taste. Before you know it, you've blown your whole day - just because you wanted to fit in and have a drink.

Gin and slimline tonic is a good one for me. I'm visiting friends for the Royal bank holiday weekend and planning to take three days off the diet. No booze since January so I figured I won't be able to drink that much without falling asleep anyway!

I would stick with a glass or 2 of wine, and sip it. I personally wouldn't bother with the seltzer - why ruin a good wine to save 100 calories?0
