Hi everyone!

Have a question, why is MFP and my ellicpitcal trainer showing such a big difference in calories burned? I know we should eat back our calories ... but my trainer shows I burned half the calories then MFP? So which I should I use? ex: I did 20m on the trainer this morning showed I burned 150 while MFP showed 334cal ...

thanks everyone! it's appreciated!

I have no actual evidence to back me up, but my assumption has always been that MFP is using averages in terms of speed and intensity. Your elliptical trainer on the other hand "knows" how fast you are going and how much resistance you are working against. I would trust the elliptical, especially if you are inputting your weight and/or it is taking your heart rate.

    Hope that helps!

I find the amounts on MFP a little arbitrary. I am sure I don't burn as much walking slowly for 3 hours as I do running for an hour (my ipod tells me my calories burned running, which is usually a little below the amount on here, but only by 10-20 cals).

What is your elliptical relying on? If it's a reputable Heart Rate Monitor, then go with that number. Otherwise, I would go with MFP (which I found to be quite close to my heart rate monitor results when compared).
