I start back to college from an 8 year break next week. I imagine I will need a Flash Drive for papers. I have no idea how they work, so my question is, Does anyone know if they are pretty self explanatory and is 4GB enough and can you erase things from them? Sorry this is so off topic, but I thought someone could offer some advise before I run out and buy one.

Actually, 2 gigs is enough. You treat it like the old fashioned floppy disks. It plugs into the USB drive....and yes, you can erase from it.

The price of flash drives is pretty cheap so get as much storage space as you can afford. The reason I say this is when you're doing research someplace you'll probably download large documents or .pdf files that you'll need the space for.

My other recommendation is to password protect your flash drive so that if you have any personal information on it no one can access it but you. It's simple as setting it up with the same userid and password like you would on your home computer.

yup, agreed, I have one that only has a half a gig, and i have never actually needed more space than that on it, and it was way cheap!

I use my ipod as a storage device also, it's awesome.

    Password protect!

If you have Vista, make you get one that will work with Vista--I had just bought a great 2 gig U3 drive one and it won't work with my new laptop :explode: :explode: :explode: :explode: :explode: :explode:

And, BACK UP YOUR FILES TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE FLASH DRIVE! I can't tell you how many times I heard of students having all their stuff on their flash drive only and then losing it or leaving it in the computer lab and it "disappearing," etc. ALWAYS back up to more than one place!
