I think comparing picky eaters to Orthorexia is a bit like comparing a habit to OCD. The difference being that with Orthorexia and OCD there is fear. Picky eaters don't generally fear other foods, they just don't like them. People with Orthorexia will literally panic if they feel they have to eat something that doesn't fit within their strict plan.

I heard a news item on the radio a few weeks ago interviewing a man with Orthorexia and he will only eat small amounts of grilled chicken, fish and vegetables. No carbs, nuts, dairy, treat foods whatsoever. Not only had his diet led him to be nutritionally short but he had also isolated himself from his family and friends for fear of being expected to eat something he didn't want to. He was losing too much weight and suffering for a lifestyle he felt powerless to change.

    Well, since you asked...

Orthorexia shouldn't be defined as an eating disorder because it's simply 'eating clean', IMO. So, because I don't want to eat things that are mass produced or have a boatload of unnatural chemicals in them, I have an eating disorder? Uh.... no. There's a reason it's not acknowledged in the DSM-IV-TR - it's common sense!

Heck, would it make a difference if someone had a 100% clean diet and ate McDonald's once a month? That's ridiculous! :noway: As long as you have a healthy, well-rounded diet (and no, humans are not meant to consume the milk of other animals... that's purely a cultural thing) then why worry about it?

Eating too much processed food makes me  And it p!sses me off when I see parents feeding their kids crap.
