Question for the moms...(or Dads)

Do you find that when you cook dinner that you make something separate for yourself?

The past 2 nights, I cooked something for my family that would put me over in my calories, so I made myself something different, like just a plain chicken breast with some rosemary and thyme and veggies. I try to make something that would satisfy both my needs and their tastes, but it is getting hard.

I was just curious if anyone else is doing this...

My husband is the cook in our family. Most of the time he cooks the meal to fit my healthy restrictions. But if he wants something a little more fattening, then he'll prepare me a special salad or a little something extra that I get first dibs on, and then they'll eat whatever is left over. I'm so spoiled.

I am awful..I usually try to save like 800 calories for dinner...lol that way I always have enough for steak and potatoes! BUT alot of times I'll cook something healthy for both of us..I mean my husband has no problem eating lean pork chops and broccoli with rice or something similar, he just winds up eating much larger portions than I do

Nope, they get what I eat and visa versa!
If I make something for "them" then I just have less of it. Or, if they want, say mashed potatoes, I separate some before putting in the milk and butter in for them and set it aside for me. My husband likes the butter and salt put in the veggies before it gets to the table, so I also, just take some out, then do it.
When making dinner, they are getting "low fat" stuff now too. I can't keep separating things, just some. Other than that, they get what I get! Like it or not!

We are all on different schedules, so we eat at different times. My grocery list looks schizophrenic at best.

I cook for me. A 17, 19, and 38 year old boy can figure it out for himself. I cook one or two family meals a week, and leave it on the stove for the stragglers.

We share the cooking and we eat the same, the only time it is different is with greesy foods, I cant have them so I will substitute for the protein. They are sharing the effects of my healthy lifestyle with no complaints. :drinker:

    NO, and here is why.
My Mom taught me and I taught my daughter the JOY of veggies and fruit.
We NEVER said things like... "You are not going to like it but eat it anyway."
That is a SURE way to get you kids to NEVER eat anything healthy.
Teaching your kids good food habits need to start as SOON as possible.
and they need to start at HOME!!!
Not School, Not at a friends house AT HOME!
If we do not do these simple things, our children will never have a clue how to eat right and healthy. Yes, I am aware that kids will balk at the idea,
Yes I know that some of you think that I am unrealistic.
Umm, NO, Who is the boss in your house?
    You or the kids?
I happen to know a couple that insist that their children are "PICKY EATERS" and that they would never eat anything healthy, They feed them a diet of Fast Food, Chicken, Nuggets, and hotdoogs. Because they said that is all that their children will eat. and that the childs will power is too strong and that they would starve themselves before they ate fruit or veggies.
This does not mean you have to rule with an iron fist, But still you need to teach your children right from wrong, and this includes eating habits.

My kids are huge veggie eaters, thankfully. You have never seen a 3 yr old attack a salad like my little girl. BUT...sometimes, like the past 2 nights, I found myself making pasta, and breaded chicken cutlets, things that I did not want to eat because I was afraid of going over my calories.

I was just wondering if other moms out there made themselves a little something different, thats all.

I think we all know how to teach our kids right from wrong.

I love food too much. If I make dinner that's a little "bad" for me, I'll eat a little bit of it, but I'll eat more of the veggies & fruit that I have on the table. Portion control. If I make something that I think is WAY too bad, I probably shouldn't have made it in the first place...this has happened a few times in the past. Why oh why do I always think mac & cheese is a balanced meal?!

I cook usually and I make the same thing which almost always includes a big salad with every meal, some sort of steamed veggies or stir fried veggies, protein usually chicken or fish and a carb...like pasta, potato, or rice....

for myself I'll go really easy on the carb, load up on the veggies and do a small portion of the protein...like 4-5 oz tops....this helps keep me inline having all the options...and I can take any leftover salad/veggies etc.. for work the next day  If its something fattening and rich like pasta w/ meatballs, sausage in gravy (tom sauce) I'll limit my portions and fill up on veggies w/ it:wink:

My son is a picky eater....and its not from lack of trying...believe me, he also has mild autism and some texture issues w/ food....but I'm lucky he eats the food we eat...loves rice and pasta and chicken....the veggies are the thing....which I sneak them into fried rices or pasta stirfries...things like that....all in all I guess I just cook one REALLY big meal for us all LOL

hugs and best of luck...YOU ARE SOOOO Lucky your 3 yrs old attacks salads like that ...that's awesome! I was the same way as a kid...but my brothers veggie of choice was corn...ONLY! lol...

There are three different meals each meal at our house. There is no reason my dd and dh should be limited by my son and/or my food allergies or other limitations.

Mine (no wheat, dairy, eggs, etc.)

My sons (no dairy, very little meat, has palate and swallowing issues and has received therapy for those, I'm just happy he's off his feeding tube so I don't strong arm him and force him to eat something he doesn't want to eat. His pediatrician and specialists are happy with his progress)

My DH and DD eat everything.

not as a mom, but a wife I used to make a different dinner for me and the hubby. He did not like that I was not eating the same things as him and now we eat the same. I either make him eat healthier and every once in a while I will have a smaller portion of something "ok" for you. It gets tough tho.
