I have a date tonight!! I am super excited, but worried about the calories from eating out. We are going to a place called Pastabilities.... so there are lots of carbs and no nutrition info to be found for this resturante. How do I keep on track tonight? How can I get a realistic estimate of the number of calories in my dinner. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

If we aren't friends already, I am always interesting in generating a larger network so feel free to add me :)

Not sure how it would look on a date but I've learned the hardway that they ususally serve more than one serving at restaurants - especially pasta - ask for 1/2 to be put in a "to go" box before they even bring it to you.

Stay away from anything creamy or breaded.

If you can stay away from cream based sauces on the pasta, that will save you a lot of calories. Also look for dishes that may have more veggies in them. Other than that enjoy your date and try not to worry too much about the calories...you can always do a good workout tomorrow (or today if you have time) to off set it. We only live once so you may as well enjoy a little!

Do they have some type of salad entree, grilled chicken maybe? Without nutrition info it will be impossible to get the exact amount of calories in your diary but you can enter what you eat and get a rough estimate. But if you want to get pasta (you aren't in prison-it IS allowed!) I would opt for something with red sauce vs. a cream sauce..and take it easy on the bread sticks. Good luck and have FUN!

She ^^ makes total sense, it's a special night and you can't always be saintly!! Treat yourself!
  • Frist rule - enjoy yourself! Dates should be fun!

Second, maybe order a 1/2 serving with a salad. Red sauce has far less calories and stay away from the extra cheese and bread.

    Have fun!

Just enjoy yourself. Don't go over the top, but don't think about calories all night either. Make a healthy choice for dinner and don't think about it after that. If the boy is cute you may want to stay away from garlic though:) heh. Have fun!

Always decide how much you are going to haveand what you are going to have before ordering. If you decide that you are going to want desert make sure you get a dinner that is not very fattening. Also some restaurants have a paper with the amounts of calories of each thing but if you want one you have to ask. Have a Great time!!

For pasta, marinara sauce is usually the best choice as far as lowest in calories and fat. I always add red pepper to it to give it a nice kick!

My husband and I go out to eat for date night every Thur. Always a challenge. I try to break down what I am eating into its parts and try to add them to my log. Like a pasta dish I figure 1-1/1/2 cups of pasta and then try and figure out the sause and other stuff. I figure 1/4 - 1/2 cup of sause. Or chicken, fish, meat - I figure a 4-6 oz serving and then estimate the sause. If I don't know I just figure at least 2-3 tbs of butter or olive oil. I don't eat potato or rice, I ask for extra vegi's. And for the salad I just estimate the dressing. And a glass of wine. Desert is a crap shoot but the food database has so much stuff that I can usually come up with something similar. And then I put in a little extra exercise on that day and try to leave a a few hundred calories for the day for wiggle room. And I usually bring home a doggie bag. But go have a great time and just do the best you can.

Don't let worrying about your food put a damper on your date. Enjoy yourself, and don't feel guilty if you order a glass of wine.

Stay away from creamy sauces and bread.
Order whole wheat pasta if they have it.
Ask for a side of steamed vegetables, even if it's not on the menu. Every restaurant should be able to accommodate this request.

    Have a good time!

I agree don't let counting calories put a damper on your date, enjoy and have fun you have tomorrow and the rest of the week to work back the extra calories. Plus you could always use it as a zig zag calorie day! You know today is going to be higher so accommodate for it tomorrow. Nsciambi gave good tips, most tomato based sauces are good, stay away from cream and leave out the bread.

But most important is to enjoy and have a fun night

Don't talk about weight and diet on the date. Look at the menu (maybe you could find the menu online as a lot of restaurants have that) and pick something that looks healthy. But most important.........enjoy yourself because you can make up for any food bloopers on another day. Have a great time!
  • Don't have much to add to the great advice you're already gotten but just wanted to say good luck on your date! :)
