So I've noticed I get really bad knee pain whenever I excercise... I have to break up my exercise into small incraments because after a few minutes, me knees just throb so bad... Does that happen to anyone else? I never really had any problems with my knees in the past except when I was pregnant (which of course was when I gained all this weight Im trying to lose), so Im wondering if maybe its from the pressure from my weight? Or maybe the type of shoes I wear? Would maybe wearing knee braces while I excercise help at all? Thanks for any input

Talk to your doctor. Find a sliding scale clinic if you need to. Knees are nothing to screw around with.0

What exercise are you doing? Yes, it could be your shoes but it could be many things. I actually had a lot of issues with my knees last year when trying to start running. I got new shoes this year and started running again and haven't had any problems as of late.0

Yes - find a good orthopedic surgeon. I've had trouble with both my knees and I weight less than 120! So, weight may not be an issue and you want to make sure you are able to exercise and not damage your knees. (I also had new knee pain beginning in March and went out and bought new shoes thinking it was the problem, but the pain got worse - that is when I sought out the orthopedist).
I've had two surgeries on my left knee and I have patellofemoral syndrome in my right. I'm currently in physical therapy and work with an orthopedic surgeon.
If money is tight - they usually recommend a few things (RICE):
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression (using a pressure bandage)
- Elevate
If these don't eliminate your pain, then see your doctor!!!! I've asked the doctor and physical therapist what types of exercises I could do - as resting isn't much in my nature. Both told me to stick to spinning (bike) and the elliptical, and that I was fine as long I didn't feel any pain.
Best of luck!!0 -
If you are getting knee pain no matter what the cause stop doing that kind of exercise. If you work out at a gym try the rowing machines as when rowing your knees are not weight bearing. Any sign of swelling/heat around the knees?0

There are a lot of things it could be -
1. If you're carrying extra weight, you should buy new shoes more often. That will definitely effect your knees. (I'm about 20 lbs over and notice knee pain if I wear my running shoes for longer than 8-9 months...but ask a pro at a good shoe store)
2. I would suggest you try foam rolling before and after your workout - google it, watch instructional videos on You Tube. Target your IT band...if it's bound up it can really impact your knee. My foam roller is my miracle cure.
3. warming up and stretching...are you doing both before starting your workout? It really does make a difference.
4. try low/no impact exercises like bike, swim, elliptical - etc. If lifting weights/doing lunges, etc ask a pro for modifications or look online for help (like: http://exercise.about.com/library/blsquatFAQ.htm )
5. you might try icing and elevating for 20 min after each workout and see if that helps. I've had 2 ACL reconstructions so always have some issues...especially when starting exercising after a period of inactivity.
I just use 2lb bags of frozen peas for my ice bags...they work great!
Make sure you are lying with your knees above heart level, throw the frozen peas on and cool down for 20 min.
Finally - yes, talk to a doctor. Knees are tricky because they typically can't tell you much w/o an MRI...but listen to your body and don't push too hard if it feels wrong. I try to think "does it hurt because it's hard or does it hurt like something is wrong?"
Best of luck to you!!0
