I went up to UT today and had a DEXA scan done. That stands for dual energy xray absorptiometry scan. It is the most accurate type of body composition analysis. They can tell you the lean mass, fat mass and bone mass in you arms, legs, trunk, abs, and hips.

Some surprising results included that my total bone mass is only 7.3 pounds, or 4.1%. I am carrying 17.1 pounds of fat or 9.6%. I have 153.6 pounds of lean mass. Total is 177.9 pounds as compared with a weighed mass of 176.5. That is less than a 1% margin of error.

They say that for my age I am slightly below the fat percent normal range of 11-21% Normal for 20-30 year olds is 8-19%. I am in the middle of the healthy range for bmi so I guess I am carrying a little more muscle and a little less fat than normal. I will bump my calories up a bit more to 2340 plus exercise calories.

The woman that did the analysis said her only advice was to split my calcium supplement up to two times of day and not take it with my coffee in the morning. When this fitness pro told me I was an inspiration, it felt really good to this guy who was a walking beach ball 8 months ago. She agreed with all my diet goals and settings and suggested I come back in two years. I will now try to add weight at the rate that I think I am adding muscle to keep my fat level about where it is.

This is better than I ever hoped for and I owe it all to this site and the wonderful people that make it what it is. Thanks so much.

Grateful Ray
