Hi everyone!

Dukan diet is all the craze in France! Any people out there trying it?

And those who don't about it's basically a low carb diet with the use of oat bran for fiber ...

My friends mum lives in UK and had this book a couple of weeks ago, I am not sure if she has started or had any success but it's being used here then!

Too funny...this just became popular again because of all the claims that HRH Duchess of Cambridge was on this before her wedding yesterday. She was looking QUITE willowy.

That being said, it's also been banned in a few european countries and even the doctor that wrote it says it's not healthy, but it's not any MORE unhealthy than the lifestyle of an obese person. I never tout cutting out food groups, and this one cuts out fruits AND vegetables. I don't care what they say...this just seems dangerous. Your body needs more than just protein and you can't absorb all of that from vitamin pills.

I've read into a lot of "diets" and while they can work and you can even successfully maintain with them you have to be very committed. I like variety too much to be able to stick to any of them. I'm a member of another board where there is every diet going from VLC TFR diets all the way to simple calorie counting. On the other board there is a chap who lost a tremendous amount of weight on atkins, he's maintained the loss by sticking to a very low carb regime, if he veers away from atkins the weight goes on very quickly. Its something i've considered but I like my vegetables too much, 70g of my carbs come from my leafy/green veg. That puts me over the atkins and dukan level. If you think you can eat that way for life then go for it (watch your fat sources tho!)

EDIT: A quick add, the chap I mentioned is now a healthy weight with low body fat%, off all meds and his cholesterol level is at a very healthy level. He uses lean meat and his fats are of the healthy kind. Atkins was typically represented by pictures of greasy fried foods, that is not the correct way to do it tho if you want your visceral fat to reduce

That sounds absolutely insane to me. I practically live off of fruits and vegetables. I couldn't imagine how horrible I would feel to not eat them. That just sounds asinine - and very unsustainable.

I read the book yesterday cover to cover and it is actually just for a handful of days - 5 for most people and 10 at the most if you are obese- that you cut out fruits and vegetables. I don't think anyone's body is going to suffer tremendously or irreversibly from not eating vegetables for 5 days (and i say that being a veggie lover who eats fresh veggies even at breakfast) The focus is on lean proteins (meat/poultry/fish/dairy/tofu/seitan etc) and oat bran in minimal amount during phase 1. After that in Phase 2 you eat most low GI veggies on alternate days until you reach your goal weight...In phase 3 you re-introduce fruit and whole grains and I think it is in phase 4 when you are allowed to eat all food groups again but with some specific guidelines. You are also supposed to exercise and drink a ton of water.

I agree that if you stay in Phase 1 for longer than the prescribed time it could be harmful....but otherwise not that different from South Beach, from what i can tell with the difference being that South Beach lets you eat healthy fats and Dukan doesn't want you to eat any extra fat when you are in the first 2 phases.

Just seems like another low carb diet. Does it work? Apparently it does for some. Is it for everyone? No. We all have different health needs and what works for one will be detrimental to another. Whether you see long term results will probably depend on how disciplined you are and how successfully you incorporate healthy carbs back into your diet down the road. Time will tell, I suppose as more people try it out.

It starts out very similar to Atkins and South Beach. The major differences being with Dukan is purely protein to get you into ketosis extremely fast, where as Atkins and South Beach promote eating protien and green veggies for 2 weeks to invoke ketosis.
