'automatic' calorie goal change with weight loss?

Quick question. I just weighed and and have lost 11 pounds (thanks myfitnesspal! ). There was a screen on my iPhone app that asked whether I wanted to have the goals (or was it the recommended calorie intake?) adjusted? I said yes.
But then I got wondering what that is all about.
Can anyone explain what's going on here?
Also, believe it or not I've forgotten what my starting weight was. Where can I find that?
Thanks

The more you weigh, the higher your Basic Metabolic Rate will be and the more calories your body will burn off at rest. If you're not adjusting your calorie goal downwards as you lose weight, you'll be eating closer to your maintenance calories and find it more difficult to lose weight.0

The less you weigh, the fewer calories you need to get by, so the app will adjust for the weight loss0
