WATCH OUT! For deceptive packaging, “net carbs” are not the same as total carbs! I bought Atkins Endulge chocolate coconut bars for a once in a while snack, and they are delicious, but the front of the box says 3g net carbs when in reality they have 19g of carbs, booo! It has a disclaimer saying that fiber and sugar alcohol carbs don’t count, as they don’t effect sugar levels as much as the “net” carbs do. As far as I know MFP does not separate the two, and so neither do I.

I just HATE gimmicky marketing that skates around the truth. Just like the “all natural” that some items claim, but when you read the ingredients it is filled with preservatives, dyes, etc. I hated this when I was pregnant!!! :explode:

Well realistically - my mother who is diabetic - she has to count ALL carbs - not just net carbs. Everyones body treats carbs differently. I also count total - not just net.

I count them all because some people's bodies digest the carbs just like it was sugar.................everyone is different, so YMMV (your mileage may vary)
  • When I was doing a low carb diet I included those bars, and if you're following atkins then you're fine (just don't eat too many sugar alcohols as it will make you gassy!). Sugar alcohols and fiber are subtracted from the total carbs to get net carbs, always. Like you said, it does say it on the packaging, I don't think they are being gimmicky at all. I ate them and lost weight.

Honestly, I only count net. I eat a lot of fiber and already keep my carbs fairly low. I generally net under 50

I always count total carbs. I also avoid sugar alcohol. It tends to give me real stinky gas.

Over the years the media and professionals alike have said this and said that about food; what you should and shouldn't eat. Its so so simple. sticking to it is the difficult thing.

My motto is eat less move more; it isn't a new thing. Make sure you're eating less fat than you need and regards to carbs, if its a sweet or nature bar, then you can guarantee that alot will come from sugar. Information about food has been round for years now so do your research.
