Ankle/foot injury from an exercise class

Last Tuesday I landed funny(my ankle gave out and my foot basically folded diagonally in half, ouch!) in Zumba and I pretty much tried to shake it off and ended up finishing the class. It was fairly sore all day but I could still walk on it so I figured I was fine. I skipped the gym on Wednesday and by Thursday it was still sore but not too bad so I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and some upper body weight exercises, and it was about the same, pain-wise. Friday and Saturday mornings I took Zumba again, and by this time it was progressively hurting more, but I was still able to walk on it and bear some weight. I was busy all day Saturday, and by the time I got home and took off my shoes and sat down, my foot and ankle were throbbing and it was swollen in a couple of places, so I put ice on it and elevated it for a while. Today I've taken it easy and only walked when necessary and did some laundry. So how long should I lay off the workouts? My problem seems to be that it feels ok when I first wake up, so I get overly optimistic and go to the gym, and by the afternoon it's so sore I have a hard time going up and down the stairs at my house!

Wow that sounds horrible. I actually hurt my ankle pretty bad too but not nearly as bad as you. I would like to know the same thing:)
  • You need to have it checked out by a doctor :flowerforyou:

If it is still causing you pain you need to get it checked out by a doctor. Injuries are not something to simple wait around with. My mother broke her ankle once and still went and worked a whole day cleaning a person's house (a large 2 story with a fully finished basement) She thought it was a sprain. I insisted she go to the hospital and have it checked out because of the swelling. Sure enough it was broken. It is a wonder she did no further harm. Check it out.

It sounds like you could have torn a ligament, get it checked out by a doctor. I did my ligaments 2 months ago and it is still pretty sore when I walk on it for too long & I still can not put too much weight on it.

The best exercise if you have hurt your ankle would be the bike as you use your legs not your ankles, so if that is it your routine does not necessarily have to suffer.

I rolled and twisted my ankle about a month ago. I did not put pressure on it for almost a week. You really need to stay off and rest it for a few days and then slowly start with modified exercising -- mainly no jumping. I did not do Zumba for two weeks after my injury and even though it has been four weeks now, I went to Zumba just last Friday and it was still pretty sore when I was done.

Of course everyone's severity of injury is different but you definitely have to give it a chance to heal before it can get better. I also put lots of ice on it several times throughout the day.

    Good luck! ♥
  • Thanks everyone! I am ridiculous when it comes to illness and injuries and doctors, I always question whether it's really "bad" enough to waste a doctor's time! Plus I am a stay at home mom to a 15 month old and have no family around aside from my husband who is in the military...which means a military clinic, where it can take days if not weeks to get an appointment : (. So I need to find someone to watch my son when I go, and preferably have a ride too, because it's my right foot and it hurts to push the pedals! So I figured I'd wait it out a few days and see if it got better. But it's been 5 days and it is only getting worse, definitely think I'll try to get the earliest available appointment, or go to a walk in clinic tomorrow.

in feb this year I walked 10 km and really managed to hurt both my ankles and right knee! I was in pain for 2 months!!!! I had horrible swelling after a week I went to the doctor and got an x-ray. Thank god nothing broken but it took 2 months to heal properly. The dr told me as it was soft tissue damage to put it in warm water and I took 3 ibufrens a day to help with the swelling (sometimes 5) All I did was a walk so i knew that it wasnt broken but my gosh the pain was horrible! I couldnt do any exercise for about 6 weeks and still i lost weight as i was careful about my eating. I would say dont work out until the pain and swelling is gone. Hope you will get better soon! Hugs!
