Too Much Fiber?

It seems each day this week (this is my third day here) I've been over on my fiber. I'm tracking fiber because the doctor I saw last week with pain from IBS (irritable bowel) suggested I make sure I'm getting enough fiber in my diet. I wasn't sure what the "normal" recommended amount was so I did a search today and have come up with 25 - 35 fiber a day is what is recommended.

So why is my goal for fiber 14 on MFP?

I've been going over my fiber goal the last three days which pushed me into the 20-27 fiber range and until I searched for what the recommended amount was, I was worried. But in my case, I'm not sure going over 14 fiber a day is a bad thing. I'm just curious as to why my goal (or anyone's goal) would be so low.

Is "going into the negative/going over" my fiber goal each day going to affect my weight loss or a bad thing?

Thanks for any input you may have :)

Hey, I think a lot of the numbers given to us are sort of a default. You can change your goals to suit your own needs.

Too much fiber isn't really a bad thing, except your tummy might protest a bit at first if it get a lot at once! lol Also, make sure to drink plenty of water to keep the fiber MOVING, if you get my meaning. While fiber can be great at keeping you regular, it can also have the opposite effect if you don't get enough water.

I have my fiber intake set at 25g a day because that is what I saw Dr. Oz say was optimal for women during an episode of Oprah. It helps keep m blood sugar level and keeps me satisfied longer.

    Does that help??

I've read that over 50 is to much. That's when you get gas and things start to back up. I get in 25-30g a day. I don't have any problems. You can check out this site, and see what it says YOU should get for your fiber intake. It also has protein and other neat calculators. I use it often.

    Good Luck! :flowerforyou:

Oh yeh, and drink tons of water. It will suck later if you don't.

Thanks Tam and Crystal :) You both are great.

I think I will change my goal to be somewhere in the 25-35 range (and check out the sites suggested) -- and now that I'm using MFP I've got a visual and a way to track my water intake so I am careful to make sure I am drinking AT LEAST the 8 recommended, but usually more like 10 cups a day. Trust me, I don't need any of the "moving" issues (hehe, Tam) and with IBS I already know what that can be like, so I'm trying to really monitor that!

    Thanks again :)
