HOT SAUCE & SALAD DRESSINGS!

For the last week or so, I have been taking in WAY too much sodium. My goal for the next two weeks is to NOT take in more than 1500 mg of sodium per day. I've looked online for low sodium foods & many websites have been somewhat helpful. I don't eat canned or processed foods & I know that fruits, dried fruits, vegetables, shredded wheat cereals, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, baked potatoes, & unsalted nuts are just a few of the many low / no sodium foods that I can eat.

My problem is hot sauce. I LOVE it & could eat it on everything but I've never been able to find any hot sauce that's not extremely high in sodium. Does anyone know if there is such a thing? Also, I love salads; sometimes I eat two a day & salad dressings are SO high in sodium. What low sodium salad dressings do you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I love hot sauce too! I usually have a few different bottles in my fridge at any given time. I have never seen a low sodium hot sauce though.

As for salad dressings...make your own! Good low cal recipes can be found through:

I make Ceasar, Ranch, Blue Cheese, Thousand Island, all sorts of vinaigrettes...it is easy, cheap, and usually I have most ingredients on hand.

Make your own low sodium hotsauce! Its not hard to make at all. Some peppers, vinegar, and a blender work wonders!!!

I too have a hot sauce addiction, well I just love anything spicy. My best suggestion is to dry your own hot peppers and use that instead. You can chop or crush them into little flakes and toss them on whatever you want. I always have a bowl of hot thai chili peppers at any given time, just in case. Not exactly the same taste as hot sauce, but I find it works pretty well.

You could possibly make your own hot sauce? And definitely make your own salad dressing. You can make it in small quantities and change up the flavors for more variety in your salads.

I too love hot sauce and have given it up. :( Plain ground cayenne pepper is a good substitute, though. Still gives you the same general flavor and spiciness, but no sodium. (well 2mg for a tbsp...which I would never eat in one serving!) I make my own salad dressing with EVOO, some red wine vinegar, and Mrs. Dash sometimes and I also found a low sodium bottled dressing. Newman's Own Olive Oil & Vinegar only has 150mg of sodium which is pretty good for pre-made dressing. Also Mrs. Dash has an extra spicy seasoning too and a chipotle one that I love. Hope some of those work for you!

    Agreed.
Definately not giving up my hot sauce. It's not gonna hurt anything.

I also don't think I could ever give up bread or cheese.
