Hi,
I have gone through and put in whagt I plan to have for my meals today - am trying sweet potato for the first time ever - hvae noticed i am going to be way over on my sugars today - can someone take a look and tell me if these sugars are all bad, or if some of them are ok as they are natural sugars....
I'm finding it hard to get my 1200kcals without going over my sugars

i have, after 4 weeks, shocked my body enough and actually no longer crave take aways or full fat fizzy drinks - although i still hvae sprite zero as a treat
main thing is that im eating fruit, and sweet potato, but my sugars are sky high.... are these naturally occuring sugars still as bad as having sugar on my breakfast, or in coffee?0 -

my main concern is these natural sugars - am doing great on 1200kcals, hve made myself eat lots of real food as opposed to very little bad food
im not hungry, and am sleeping far better
its just these sugars....0 -

It's not about "picking someone apart," it's about concern for others' health and safety. 1200 is the very bottom of what's considered safe for women by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Eating less than that (and often, eating that little) is counterproductive and puts the body into starvation mode, which actually makes it start storing fat, instead of losing it (and even making the body use muscle for fuel, instead of fat). For many people, such a low calorie count is also unsustainable. When someone says they're eating 1200cal/day, that tends to raise red flags when that's the only information provided.
sarahpreece1987 - I can't see your diary entry (I'm still learning the ins and outs of the site), but I'd venture to guess that it's hidden sugars in what you're eating. Whatever you eat that is processed or premade (breads, cereals, milk, etc) will likely have sugar of some sort in it. "Healthy" versions of these foods, such as "fat free", also often have extra sugar in them (the fat gives the food its flavor, take out the fat and you lose the flavor, so to make things palatable to people so they buy it, the makers will often put sugars in). Fruits will, of course, have sugar in them, as well. The key with them is that they also generally have quite a bit of fiber in them (for example, I looked up a fresh orange and it has 14g of sugar, but also 7g of fiber).
Also, it might be good to research the differences between fructose and glucose. The body treats and metabolizes them differently, and that's worth understanding.
That said, unless the amount of sugar is affecting your health (such as keeping blood sugar too high, which fructose/fruit sugars won't do), and if it's coming from natural, whole food sources, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Also, I recommend trying to find something to get you moving. Exercise will help build up muscle, which will help you lose weight. You don't have to jump into 5 days a week. Even doing something like a little Yoga once a week would help.0 -
I think, and I'm not in any way an expert, that naturally occurring sugars in fruit and veg are OK. I think its all the added stuff you need to watch. To be honest though its sounds like you're off to good start and if you have a sweet tooth fruit is an excellent way to wean your self off really sugary stuff.0

I think your selections look good today as far as your sugars are concerned, the yogurt looks to have added sugar and maybe the applesauce if it isn't a natural one. But with just those as added sugar, I'd say you're off to a very good start there!0

I wasnt picking her apart, just asking a question.
Im new here and when I put in my stats 2 weeks ago (which aren't far off from the original poster)
My calorie count is approx 1600 per day and I have an office job 8 hrs of my day.
Starting out I couldnt do it based on 1200 calories, I know this. One day I will get there but not as a starting point for myself ..(Again I say MYSELF as everyone is different)
I say kudos to you if you can do it on 1200!0 -

According to you're signature you're also 159lbs, a far cry from a SW of 292 like the original poster is. It wasnt picking anyone apart. Merely a question.0 -
It looks like most of your sugars are natural sugars. Like one of the other posters said, you may want to see if you can find a lower sugar yogurt. If you were drinking as many sodas and eating as unhealthy as you were, I wouldn't worry too much just yet about your sugars unless you have diabetes. Get used to the caloric content and then adjust once you are used to eating that few calories. You sound like you are really thinking this through, which is great!
How much did you indicate you wanted to lose in a week? I think that 1200 is really quite low. Just don't set it so low that you can't stick with it and end up giving up. It's better to take it slow and steady and keep the weight off than to try to do it really fast.0
