So I've been losing weight by changing my diet. I lost 8.8lbs in one week. I was feeling really good. One of my best friends is in town (he's in the army and leaving for afghanistan in a week) so we had a couple BBQ's with lost of good food and booze. I did not overeat but I did drink quite a bit. and i weighed myself this morning and BAM! i was 6lbs heavier!! i'm hoping it's just water retention but man, i was SOOOO dissappointed in myself.

    one word: WATER
  • One pound equals 3500 calories. Your body already needs a certain amount of calories to just run. You would have to eat that plus the extra 3500 calories for it to turn to a pound of fat.

Don't worry if you ate too much today. Just go back to eating normal tomorrow. Your body will adjust. It may just hold water weight for a couple of days.

Yep, water! get back on track today and you'll be a peeing fool! :) By Wednesday you'll see 1/2 those lbs gone. Good luck!
  • This happened to me over Easter weekend. I was up 7 pounds in 2 days. I think it was from drinking and all the sodium. Unfortunately it didn't come right off for me. I am still up 2 pounds a week later. I would just make sure to stick to your calories, comsume plenty of water, and make sure to keep working out. Unfortunately it was a lesson to me that I can't splurge like that too often because there are definitely consequences. Good luck and keep on track!

Isn't it so funny how you are supposed to drink drink drink water and then the water wants to wait 2 weeks to come off even though you feel like you are peeing every 2 minutes!!

After reading Bob Greene's book, this could very well be water weight. He states that the quick weight loss most people lose in the beginning is nothing more than water weight. When we lose weight slowly we are losing fat. Don't worry, we need water to sustain our bodies anyway. :)

I was at a writers conference over the weekend, and I'm eight pounds up from Friday. I know it's because of all the salt and sugar -- my fingers are visibly bloated, even! I did eat stupid, and I know I will have to work to make up for it, but I also know it's not a "real" eight pounds.

FYI - bbq sauce is high in both sugar and sodium, so I'm not surprised at all at your "gain"!

It is more than likely water...but depending on what you drink...alcohol can contain A LOT more calories than you realize. Also....something interesting I found out...when you consume more than 2 alcoholic beverages at one time...your metabolism slows down 75%. Your body recognizes alcohol as a toxin (poison) and knows if you consume too much and it doesn't process it, you could die. Therefore...it stops metabolizing any stored fat or any food you are consuming and goes straight for the alcohol.

I gain 4-6# every weekend when I go out on long bike rides. It's just water retention in my case. I hold onto it through the week but when it finally does come off, I also see the ~2# of lard I've lost that week come off at the same time. It stinks to see the number go up after a ride, but it's pretty stinking awesome to see 6-8# disappear 'overnight'.

Unless you ate a WHOLE FREAKIN LOT, lol, you are just retaining water, too :) Course, by this point in your thread, you've already been told that a bunch of times ;)

Also...if you lost 8.8 pounds in 1 week...most of that was water too.

i know that the 8.8lbs was probably water weight but i've been at a plateau for months so i made drastic changes to my diet (i can't exercise since i broke my foot). anyways, i didn't eat a whole lot so it probably is the water weight. i'm actually about to input my calories and figure out how much i really did eat. lol

okay so all last week my food was slightly under 1200cals. this weekend (alcohol included) my cals were 2129 on saturday and yesterday they were 1866. so i would think at MOST i would gain 2lbs...not 6! so i'm hoping so much that it'll all come out within a day or two.

Alcohol will dehydrate you - which causes the body to retain water. Drink a bunch of water to flush the toxins out and I bet the scale goes right back down.
