Over the last 3 weeks I've started running again - not loads just a few k everyday. I'm really enjoying it and can feel a real improvment in my fitness. The thing is I've started putting on weight. I was down 17 pounds and now I've put back on 6. I'm still looking slimmer, could this be muscle weight?

I don't think that its possible even more a man to gain that much muscle in 3 weeks. Has something in your diet changed. A woman can normally only gain about .5 to 1 pound of muscle per month.0

hi - well I guess i was waiting for one of our "experts" to jump on....
From what I've been reading in old topic posts is that muscle builds very slowly and 6 pounds in a short amount of time doesn't sound that possible. I read that a body builder would be able to put maybe 10 pounds on in one year.
That said, it may be water being retained in the muscles for healing purposes...
just a thought.

Muscle and fat weigh the same. They just have different volumes.
Could be anything really... are you hydrating properly? Are you eating back your exercise calories?
You could also be gaining muscle.
Also, I usually weigh a few extra pounds the day after a big race or long runs... my understanding is it's extra fluids that my body wants to hold onto while it repairs any tissue damage. An example would be that I ran a half marathon yesterday... my pre-run weight was 227.2, my post run weight was 225, my weight this morning was 229.4. And tomorrow I'll likely be back at 227 as I have been hydrating all day.0 -
I'd be more inclined to say it's water weight. Putting on a little weight after starting a new work out routine is normal, it's your body retaining water to protect itself. It'll come off pretty soon tho. Never fear.
It takes longer than a couple weeks to build up 6lbs of muscle.

Water weight indeed! Good job on starting running though! It's good for you.
In the same volume, muscle is heavier than fat. People gonna be all over you for that! LOL!:laugh:0 -
While i don't think it's impossible to lose that much weight in three weeks, i have trouble figuring out what muscle weight could have come from if you weren't doing any weight training.0

Thank you!
An example of this is that at my "fittest" I was 127, 16-17% bf and a size 3/4. Currently I am 128, 21% bf and a 5/60
