Polar FT4 (Not in Range) and Insanity

I started Insanity a couple of weeks ago and finally last week got a Polar FT4. I know that Insanity is interval training so its not going to be like a workout on a treadmill. My "Not in Range" alarm goes off through most of the workout because I am above my target heart rate. There is no way I can keep up with the intensity and stay within that range. Last week I buned the same amount of calories in a 45 minute walk (brisk 4 mph) as I did doing a 40 minute Insanity DVD. There is no way that I work even half as hard on a walk as I do during Insanity. Is that because you burn more calories while in the target zone? Insnaity to me is not all about the calories burned, but the way it is changing my body, but I just wonder about this. Having the HRM has really opened my eyes, when Shaun T says "check your heart" what really should I be checking for? I should be on week 3 but due to our busy schedule I am only able to follow the schedule, not the 6 day a week calendar. I still workout every day, but can only do Insanity about 4 days a week. Any insight would be appreciated, I want to make sure I am getting the most out of this, I love it!

my HRM shows below zone 1, zone2, zone 3 and above zone 3. when I do Insanity, my HR is usually in Zone 3 and above zone 3 -- on a month 2 dvd, I spend about 40 mins total in those two zones. When I get the intensity that high, I burn 500+ calories, and even up to 600 on one dvd.

In answer to your question - you should be burning more calories the higher your heart rate is. your body does not stop burning calories bc you are above your target zone. When you check your heart, you should be making sure that your HR is not above the max it should ever be trained at. The general formula for max HR is 220 - your age. Mine is 195, and the highest Insanity has EVER pushed my HR is 190, so I'm still 'safe."

Im not sure if my FT4 has zone 1, 2, and 3, its at home now! If it does what does that mean is it something that you set manually for Insanity? I just found it odd that I would burn close to the same amount walking and i never got out of the zone. Also, when Shaun T says check your heart, what does he mean? Where should it be?
