You know, I am horrible at this and really think I need to do it. I (currently) have a roommate so I find it harder when I cook for both of us to portion control/weigh - it's silly but I just don't do it... I am planning to buy a scale this week, however; so wish me luck lol I hope it will help me!

I'm an avid weigher. I always thought my portions were normal, when I started weighing stuf last year they were probably 3 times bigger than they should have been. The only thing I don't weight is salad leaves, things like spinach I tend to use a measuring cup for.

I was eating dinner with my mother the other day, she mentioned she was only having a small portion, I looked to her plate and my jaw literally dropped, her small portion was maybe 5 portions of pasta/sauce/cheese. It was astounding because I used to eat that and maybe go back for more! So glad I have my scales, don't know what i'd do without them lol

I dont yet, I intend to, how do you know what is the correct portion size? or amount? you are aiming for? Also English people where can I buy measuring cups from? Never seen those before? thanks

Hiya, you can get American sized measuring cups in specialist cookshops or the bigger dept stores, try John Lewis. Good ones will also show the decimal equivalent on them, so you can see what that "one cup" is in measurements you "get".

I usually weigh everything on a digital scale though and initially go for 100g of everything, only because that's the index amount and I wanted to see what 100g of various things looked like. Sometime it's quite surprising!

    Hope that helps :flowerforyou:

I don't have the free time to measure everything every time I eat it but I just measured 1 cup of cereal and threw it in the bowl, and now I guesstimate all bowls of cereal based on how full the bowl is compared to when I did measure it. Same thing with milk. And my glasses are either 8 oz or 16 oz so I never measure liquids either.

I weigh absolutely everything except liquids, which are measured with measuring spoons or in a liquid measuring cup.

The first week or two on MFP, I didn't own a food scale and was using measuring cups and spoons. When I got my digital scale, I was SHOCKED how far off measuring cups are for just about everything, as very little of what we eat is truly a uniform shape and size. And as far as going by 'piece count' on a package--WAAAAAAYYYYY off!

Get a scale, use it. You'll be much more accurate in your logging.
