Other Sources of Protein and Vitamins on a Low Carb Low Fat

I am starting a low fat low carb diet and am looking for ideas on how to get more protein other than through eating meat or nuts (which I will eat, but I want variety). Specifically I am looking for suggestions on healthy types or brands or protein shakes, bars, ect.

Also if anyone has any suggestions on other vitamins or minerals I should take to help this diet or in order to get all of my nutrition, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Uh low fat and carb? Severely restricting 2 macros are just not smart. Unless you are going to be getting 400g of protein a day I wouldnt suggest it :p

protein bars are not healthy and are loaded with crap. Try eating whole real foods and you will look and feel better :] DOnt be scared of fat!

most of those are high in sugar.

ya i dont advocate limiting macros like this..these fad diets. they are harmful to overall health and long term weight maintenance. there is nothing fattening about carbs or fat. and meat has tons of fat in it, so do nuts. a proper diet is a proper overall diet. one that you can live with for the rest of your life. not one that is restricting..that is why these fad diets never work long term.

Who told you to go on a diet that is both low carb and low fat, and mostly protein shakes? So. . . you're avoiding a lot of real foods with nutritional value? Maybe you should just be on the "vitamin diet"? you do know that protein shakes are often loaded with sugars and so much extra calories that you might as well eat regular food? (They're not all bad but 70% of the ones I see on people's posts are probably 400 calories or more, lots of sugars .. etc.)

Can you explain a little more what this diet is about and why, maybe we're not understanding you or maybe you need to get some better nutrition advice.

Beans - by them dry and soak them and cook in a pressure cooker or crock pot... not sure on the carb count, but most are fat free, and they are LOADED with both protein and fiber and low cal. Chick peas and black beans are my personal favorite

Hw about tofu. Sounds gross to most poeple but marinated and grilled/baked it is fabulous! Are you doing Dukan?

If you are not doing Dukan, you should check it out. It is a plan that is low carb/ low fat. Also, I think this is much healthier than just a regular low carb diet, the ones loaded with saturated fat & cholesterol. As long as its not no carb no fat, I think people are over- reacting!
  • I know the p90x fat shredder plan recommends 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fat. Its hard to get that amount of protein and keep the other two low.

Egg whites are high in protein, low in carbs/fat.

You can do other searches based on nutritional value at that site.

geez. I agree wholeheartedly with everything up there. There are a bunch of problems with low carb/low fat. Why would you restrict fat? It would be your energy source in the absence of carbs. Fat won't make you fat. Insulin will trigger the formation of fat in cells in the form of triglycerides that will not break down while insulin is present. Not only do you form new fat, but in addition you can't even use the fat you already have.

Aim for your lean body mass in grams of protein and make up the rest of your diet in fat. The only carbs you should eat while in fat loss mode would be leafy veggies. You'll get tons and tons of fiber from it, and all the nutrients you need. Don't fear fat - it's super healthy for you. (yes - even saturated fat......)

Just for the record - the huge majority of beans have more carbs than they do protein. Some diets will call these foods "protein" but that's really not the case when the scale slides more to the carb side.

I am interesting in trying a diet similiar to Ideal Protein. However, I do not want to go through their program for several reasons including the strict limitations on food and that you have to buy their food items. I want to cut fat and carbs, but I want to do it in a healthy way and thought that if I am cutting these two items, I will naturally have to eat more other items, vegetables and protein. Hope that helps!

I am on a low carb/low-normal fat diet which I am seeing a special doctor to be monitored on. The protein shakes that I use frequently are Premier Protein Shakes (Costco). They have 160 calories, 30 grams of protein, and have 3 net carbs. I like to have them as a breakfast on the go. I also like to use Fat free cottage cheese, peanut butter, tuna, egg whites and yogurt - kroger/fredmeyer has a yogurt called "Carbmaster", it only has 80 calories, 8 grams of protein, and 3 net carbs. :)

    Here's what your macronutrients do:

Carbohydrates: Half of your daily intake of carbohydrates convert to glycogen to give your muscles energy. If your muscles don't have enough glycogen, they begin to consume themselves in a process called ketosis. Not good. You'll be destroying your valuable lean body mass. The other 50% is used to fuel your brain, which controls your hormone function, heart beat, respiratory function, body temperature, mood, and ability to think. Cutting carbs means that you're cutting the food to your brain.

Fat: Fats line all of your major organs (liver, pancreas, lungs, stomach, esophagus, brain). Fats line the underside of your skin. Fats are necessary to absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K. Cutting fat means that you're depriving your organs of a necessary component for their proper function.

Protein: Aids in metabolizing carbohydrates. Protein aids in the building of muscle.

All three of these macronutrients are necessary for proper body function. A balanced diet of 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat provides your body with all it needs every day to work well. Shoot for that percentage every day, but since that's nearly impossible, keeping that balance about every three to five days works well.

Depriving yourself of macronutrients will only drive your body to binge.
