I'm sure by the magic of internet I'm only getting these adverts because I love burgers and the internet knows, but isn't it a leettle bit strange that a fitness website has "Free Burger Vouchers" on every other page?? How does that work? Why not "Free apples!" instead?

  • LOL. Marketing at it's finest. That's why candy is across the aisle from Slim-Fast in the grocery store. They KNOW who can't resist it!

I never thought of that but you are right the 'weight loss' products are in the flippin' candy aisle in my grocery store. Too funny!

Those advertisements are based off of your computers cookies. That is how MFP stays a free site. The makers get paid for allowing advertisers to sneak a peak at what is going on on your computer. Try searching for apples on the internet. You will eventually see them on the sidebar.

The ads that show up are through an advertising service. They are 'random' or, if you have been recently searching for something by a particular company that also advertises through this service, you will find that the ads shown are related to that search.

Did you happen to search on something burger-related recently? I searched for nutritional information on a particular restaurant once and the ads on this site began showing coupons for that restaurant. Likewise, when I searched for for something exercise related, the site began showing P90X ads and Kettleworx ads. It has also changed to show rolling kitchen carts and sheets sets...depends on what my other internet activity has been.

Bottom line - MFP doesn't determine what ads you see - you really do!

+1, EXACTLY!! People complain all the time under the feedback section but it's YOU who determines the ads. I have never, EVER seen a fatty add here on MFP, it's all WW, Herbal Magic and dealfind.com discount sushi here. Today there is also a CIBC add, fine by me

Its called advertising. I'm sure the creators of the site are here to make money. That's how they make it.

That just can't be true. I never search for burgers, icecream, cupcakes, chips etc on the internet, and they are literally the only ads i see on this site. If it was really related to what i've been searching for the lat month or so it's be lego and general grevious i'd be seeing in the banners *lol*

They can also come from conversations you have had with other members. The advertisers read too. Or perhaps someone else has used your computer? Regardless, it's true. That is how free sites stay free. :) I looked up 1-800-flowers yesterday and today guess what's on my sidebar? The other day I looked up MIO water flavering. Within an hour it was on MFP. Damn spies! Lol!
  • Personally, I don't mind the ads one bit. I'm provided this amazing service for free. They have to make money somehow, and I'm free to ultimately make my own choices about what to buy or not buy. I just know this is a really valuable tool for me. Thanks MFP!
