If a recipe calls for coconut milk how do you substitute cow's milk?

From a culinary standpoint, I'm wondering why you would want to? The answer to your question is tied up in what your goals are and how the milk is used.

If your goal is to cut fat, you need to know you're going to be cutting a lot of flavor, too. If you go with non-fat cow's milk it's going to change the texture of the dish dramatically. You might be better going with evaporated milk, texture wise. You might also want to consider using coconut extract to replace some of the flavor you're going to miss.

If you want to send me a copy of the recipe and let me know what your goals are I'd be glad to take a look at it for you and see what can be done to modify it.

    Good luck!

The recipes I've used that called for coconut milk were Asian or Caribbean dishes and the coconut milk gives it an authentic flavor and texture, that cow's milk would take away from. Are you allergic to coconut?

I happen to really like coconut milk. If it's a sweeter kind of recipe, I'd say use coconut milk. Silk makes it now too, even in unsweetened.

Found this site that might give you some ideas:

But if pixietoes has experience and can look at the specific recipe you're trying to make, I'd definitely go that route!

I use Native Forest unsweetened organic Light coconut milk. 35 cals for 1/4 cup. with 3 g of fat. pretty tasty... But again it depends on you goals...or if you can't find coconut milk.

Thanks for all your comments. I am making a chocolate peanut butter pie. I just didn't want to buy coconut milk. I have sweetened coconut milk, but that is not what it means.

    Thanks!
