So I had been doing Zumba as my daily exercise, but all the twisting seemed to bother my knee (just the left one). This week I switched to walking on the treadmill to see if maybe it just needs a rest. After walking this morning for an hour, I could actually hear my knee cracking on every step I took coming up the stairs from the basement where my workout stuff is. I have seen people at the gym with braces on their knees and wonder if anyone could tell me if that would be a good idea maybe. I refuse to say at 35 that I have parts going bad on me lol, but Maybe some support wouldn't hurt it either. Heck I don't know. Any ideas out there would be appreciated :)

my knees pop/crack at every step going up and down the stairs.... sigh. I'm almost 39 and it's a little worrisome! :( i'm hoping it's just me getting used to working out, and that as I lose the weight it will get better!
  • I started to snap, crackle and pop in my mid-20's...and I don't wear a brace for anything.

You might want to try taking something like glucosamine for your joints.

I'm 35, and my knees have been popping a lot too (mostly one sided). My 11 year old has the same problem, so I don't know if it's age related.... I think it just is. *shrug*

Does you knee hurt? Is there swelling? Or just cracking and popping?

My knees do it too, and I'm 30. They will, at times, get too painful to work out but it's rare. Other then that, I just work out with headphones so I can't hear it, lol.

It could just be bubbles in the knee.

Or, you could be walking the wrong way with one leg. When you walk around, have a look at your feet and which way they're pointing. A lot of people point their feet outward, off at an angle from their direction of travel. That actually puts a small amount of torque on the knee and twists it.

My ankles pop constantly. I asked my doctor about it. He said it's fine, not a sign of arthritis. I'd be curious if you speak with your doctor what they say.

My knees, shoulders, and hips tend to crack and it's been like that as long as I can remember. There's never any pain so I don't really pay attention to it. My trainer finds it incredibly amusing because he uses my shoulder cracking to count when I'm doing overhead press sets... LOL!

Well, I am younger than than and my knees and ankles crack all of the time. In fact, that started when I was in my teens....... no issues resulting from it to speak of. BUT- they never HURT, either....... just crack/pop when I go up and down stairs or whatever.

I'm 29 and my knees have popped and cracked for 15 years, I was a cheer leader and drill team member. Both of which were very hard on them! I wear a brace often, looking for a new less cumbersome style but sometime it's just from using it more now then you used to!

My knees have pop/cracked since I was a teenager. Even just to squat down and pick something up.

I'm 29 and have a history of sports related knee issues. I wear two knee braces for added stability, you can get basic ones for $20 a pop at CVS. You might just have some minor cartilage tears. I'm no doctor, but it might just be getting older. It couldn't hurt getting it checked out by a specialist.

I'm 29 and 3 years ago I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both knees. My knees pop, but mostly they grind (no cartiledge so it's bone on bone). They don't hurt like they used to but that's because I'm losing weight and the pressure on my knees is being reduced. I also try to take glucosimine and chondrotin (sp?).

As long as your knees aren't hurting I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if they do start hurting, get to the doctor. You don't want to just go out and get a brace because sometimes braces can cause damage to knees (according to my doc).

    Good luck!

I'm 35 as well. I was very active in my teen years (cheer, track, gymnastics) and have multiple joints that ache, pop, and crack. If there is pain associated with the cracking, you should have your knee looked at by a doctor. I actually have developed quadricep tendonitis in my right knee (happens when the mechanics of how you move are off). Additionally, and I know this is a kick in the pants, it could be arthritis setting in. I have it in both of my shoulders that crack as well.

Occasional cracking and popping is normal, however, if it becomes bothersome...be safe and get it checked out. It could be that the repetitive movements are just irritating it.

    Best of luck!!

It's funny that you say that. I wear headsets when I work out or do any exercise and I have no idea what cracks on me....maybe I will have to pay more attention.....but on the other hand if it is not hurting maybe I should not listen for anything.

The snap crackle and pop that you are hearing is the release of gas pockets or bubbles in your joints.

Knees are a load-bearing joint (and in my case they bear quite a load  ). We call upon them to do more than they're prepared for sometimes. Building up the muscles in the surrounding area will help immensely with the cracking and popping problems. You should read a book called "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue. He tells why we have problems and gives exercises to do which will fix things. He says never wear a brace. It's all about strengthening the muscles all up and down the body which will in turn fix the problem in the knee. The method has worked wonders for me. It does take about 45 minutes of stretches every day but it's truly worth the time.

I'm 23 and my knees crack so bad other people notice when I'm going up and down the stairs. Every single person on my mother's side of the family has had some sort of knee surgery so I think part of it runs in the family. I also played soccer for 10 years which could be another culprit. If it doesn't cause any pain I wouldn't worry about it the popping sounds.

I have tendon tears in my shoulder that cause it to pop and HURT sometimes. I went to a orthopedic doctor who gave me some excerises to strengthen the surrounding muscles to help it heal. It still hurts sometimes but not nearly as bad. I am only 22.

Thanks for the encouragment and advice everyone! I appreciate it. Guess it can be easing on the mind just to know that your not the only one making funny noises when walking up the stairs

Sadly, my knees and ankles have been popping and cracking since I was a teenager. My mom always laughed that I can't sneak up the stairs because that popping noise was my ankles. No stealth mode!
