Hi all, its a bit of a funny one but I have recently started replacing my lunch with a protein based meal replacement bar and I am not sure if its effecting my bowls! I am now 'going' about 4/ 5 times a day, is this normal?? Is it the protein? I am not a big eat eater so rarely met my protein targets before but am now on target or slightly over each day. Is this just my body adjusting to the change or will it be like this as long as I am on this plan? I actually had quite a poorly tummy today  which is OK if its just an adjustment but might ditch it if it is likely to continue.

Thanks for your advice!

not sure. I have never had change of regularity from protein shakes.
I wonder if its something else, like the milk in the shake, if lactose intollerent or some combination .
could be something in the protein powder stuff you are not getting along with. might be more fibre in that.

are you able to mix fruit into it. ? I love putting milk + chocolate protein powder + banana . Something about banana milk is yummy to me. But also, the banana seems to help my system figure it self out. and, potasium right!

or if you already are mixing fruit, maybe too much .?

Someone recently told me that they went 6 times a day, and had asked a Dr about it, and they had said that anything from 1-10 per day was considered normal.

Not sure if thats true or not?! lol

I wonder how much fiber you are eating during the day. Your protien suppliement might be adding more to your diet.

Usually high protein high fat diets cause constipation, not the other way round. Nomadic humans eating what humans are designed to eat biologically poo about 6 times a day. We in the West far less. It's actually better for you to go more often.

Look closely at the label of your protein bar. A lot of them warn of digestion/intestinal side effects.

Does your protein bar have "sugar alcohols" (listed right after the sugar grams)? A lot of people have troubles digesting these, causing frequent bowel movements.

I've heard up to 3 times a day is normal. My first thought is it might be a food sensitivity... But that would only be if you were eating it 6 times/day! Make sure you eat lots of fiber to bulk up in the bowel. And of course, drink more (at least 8 cups of) water if you are eating more fiber. Maybe cut back to having one every other day? If you don't FEEL any different, I think you're ok. I don't know. Maybe ask your doctor? Or call the company, and see what they say.

Check the bar packing, on my bars it clearly states that excessive consumption may lead to laxative effects.

Check the fiber content also...you may just be getting more than enough of your healthy share...

BTW....I'd be more worried if you weren't going more than once a day....3 times a day is average and perfectly healthy...so I've heard :)
