What is the right way to do a plank? I tried it for the first time last night and I was able to hold it for about 40 seconds.

And, and you vary it? For example, lift your legs to the side or something?

You can tap your foot to the side while holding plank position, also try tapping your hands to the side too. Here's a website for correct form.

The big thing is the keep your core engaged. No sticking your butt up in the air! Tons of ways to modify or travel while plank position. Latest one in class we hold it, then using a step walk our hands up and down. Really works the arms. :-)

Yea i always keep telling myself not to let my core sag when i'm doing the plank. I did the plank this morning and followed it up with some push ups. I have the wii fit and under strength training if you do the push-ups they trainer has you do a push up followed with a side plank. The first time I did that I thought i was going to make myself fall! LOL

i take a just abs class twice a week, and the majority of it is planks. we hold a regular one on our fore arms, then just tap ur knees to the floor one at a time, then the up and over ones where u get on ur ride, reach up high and then dip ur arm back under. plank jacks, like jumping jacks only in plank position, and then wide leg and inner leg planks on ur hands. just widen ur feet and bring ur knees up to opposite elbows. i used to only be able to hold a plank for 30 sec. im now up to three min! im telling u, planks are the ISH! lol.

Once you get the form down, they're not bad, but the first time I did them - WOW, I was concerned for my safety. LOL Now I can handle doing about 10 push ups w/ the side planks. I don't rush and really pay attention to form.

Oh and I put a towel on my wii balance board so I don't slip or sweat all over the board.
