Resting my body or Push through the pain?

Hey my fitness pals,

I am looking for your feedback. I am 320 pounds and joined the gym about 1 month ago and have been losing weight. I started taking kick boxing, but it is so hard on my body that I end up skipping the gym the next day or two to allow my body to heal. I am a carpenter and am on my feet all day so it’s important that I don’t over do it or I miss work. I enjoy the kick boxing but, it kills me for two days. My question is do you think, I should push through and keep going and my body will catch up to the abuse I put it through or back off the kick boxing and use the elliptical for my cardio work out as its so much easier on my body?

Thanks
~Jake

Happy Mothers Day to all you moms!

i actually just pushed thru some pain. I did a warm up/cool down just to stretch out the old muscles. I am glad I did because I feel great now. Later...i'll probably be walking funny, but as long as you stretch and don't get stiff. U should be good. I'm hovering around 300 right now myself and it isn't easy, but with everyday comes another milestone! You can do it.

I would keep going with the kick boxing. Muscle soreness is a sign of them growing and getting stronger. I would do it once a week and then take the next day or two off. Next time you go back to the gym, do your regular cardio/strength training routine.

I workout 3 days a week (due to a back injury that is all I can take right now). I go to the gym 2 of those 3 days and try to do Tae Bo at home the 3rd day. Tae Bo kicks my butt and I've been working out regularly for over a year. It makes me do stuff that isn't "normal" for my body and I think that switching things up and keeping our bodies confused is a good thing. Prevents a weight loss plateau and us getting bored with our workout routine. :) It'll get easier as your body does get used to it. Hang in there!

Your body will be ok as long as when you say push through the pain it isn't pain that is sharp and debilitating i.e Joint pain. You can work out again especially with doing only body weight stuff and not heavy weights everyday. Its really only when you are tearing down muscle lifting heavy weights that you are tearing down muscle. So yea if its muscle pain and soreness work through it or every other day, if its sharp pains then stop for sure!

It depends on the type of pain. Is it muscle soreness? I tend to push through that....

BUT......I had horrible sharp knee pain and ended up at the orthopedic surgeon and am now in PT.

I think we need more information about your pain.....

Maybe just one day rest after the boxing, then push through the pain...try to drink a protein shake after your workouts (preferably before and after if you can) They help to heal muscles and help the pain. It will be hard for the first couple months

If you're dealing with muscle soreness, you should be alright - though even heavy-duty fitness folks tell you not to work the same muscle groups every day, so be mindful of that! If you're dealing with joint pain (I just came out of sore knees), then REST. It's one thing to push through a little muscle soreness, but it's something else entirely to blow out your knees!

Truthfully, I know it's very little help, but you have to do what feels best to you. If you're able to function as you are now, then stay with it. If you are having a little trouble, you'll probably be okay. If it hurts to move the next morning, you're probably overdoing it and maybe you need to take a break. It's all well and good to put in this fabulous lifestyle change, but you need to be able to live your life and work and play in addition to your exercise.

    Good luck to you!!!

Its shap, its in my knees. I would call it debilitating all I want to do is sit with my feet up, and they still hurt. I may need to wait till I lose some more weight before I do all the jumping around. I don't know I just know I miss the gym when I don't go and I also eat wrose when I am in pain as I am a comfort eater... I have been going to the gym twice a day six days a week and feeling great. I do kick boxing and I don't want to move for a few days. So frustraiting...

If you want to continue the kick boxing, can you modify it a little bit for right now? I know if I can't do something exactly as it is done - I will modify it so *I* am not going to end up hurt.

If it's muscle pain/fatigue you're dealing with there are things you can do to minimize the impact. Stretching/warming up/cooling down the muscle groups will help immensely. Another tactic to use is a salt bath after your workout. Some swear by Epsom salts, I prefer dead sea salts (Walmart, $5). Also, HYDRATE! We're not just talking about water, but also your electrolytes. Instead of downing a whole bottle of Gatorade and then a bunch of water, mix the two for your workouts so you're continually replenishing. 1 Part Gatorade to 3 Parts water.

I quit kickboxing for the exact same reason. My knees would hurt so bad, crackle, pop, grind, you name it, my knees were doing it. So I went to see my Dr and he said that kickboxing is too high impact then adding the turns and stances, I was just aggravating it.

So...I quit doing kickboxing and found another cardio to do. I only have these 2 knees and certainly don't want surgery on it alter. Be kind to your body, it's the only one you have. :)

    REST! REST! REST!

One or two days rest is THE best way to prevent injury, over-training, burnout, and fatigue. You must give your muscles time to repair. How many athletes do we hear of who take "3-days rest"? Take your rest.

I was in a really tough race last Sunday and took 4-days rest. TOTALLY worth it. In the middle of training, in one of the hard weeks, I took two consecutive days off. My body was tired and needed a break. I was rewarded by having 5 super intense, amazing workouts in a row!

Give your body a break. You'll be repaid with fresh muscles and great workouts. Pain and fatigue following workouts is your body's way of saying, "I'm tired. I need rest." In most cases, pushing through the pain of exhaustion and fatigue is not healthy.

    Good luck!

SHARP PAIN IS BAD! If you are having sharp pains that is ligament and tendon pain..not good. Muscle pain you can work through..sharp pains are joint pains. Its not worth it at that point to push through sharp pains to only injure yourself past the point of being able to do anything. Modify what you are doing if you love it, or change it up a bit. You wouldn't drive your car broke you would fix it..don't run your body broke.

Yes, sharp pain in your knee is not good!!! RICE....Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate.....and see your doctor.

I got diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome.....sharp pain deep in my knee joint....

But, it's related to muscle weakness and a previous knee injury on the other side.....

The PT assessed my current exercise regimen and suggested that I focus on doing spinning and eliptical......(low impact)....and swimming (but I'll pass on that)....
