I've been on a diet for 6 1/2 months and lost over 80 lbs but now my weight loss has really slowed. I was thinking about going on a lower carb diet(not Atkins, i want to be able to eat fruit) Does anyone know what a good number of carbs will work?

You should see the documentary Fathead if you haven't already, the guy in the documentary set an amount of about 125 grams a day, but it would more than likely depend on your weight. I have lost about 82 lbs since midddle of january, doing a meal replacement diet and my carbs are usually around 100 grams, I have lost consistently on average 5 lbs a week. I am being monitored by a dr.

First let me say congratulations on your weight loss thus far. I am a type one diabetic and I follow a more "slow" carb diet. The right carbs that don't spike your blood sugar is what's key. There's lots of info out there on foods that are low on the glycemic scale. I would take a look at those. I'm sure you'll be pleased.

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 1/2 months ago, so I went on a prescribed low carb diet and have lost 25 lbs and my diagnosis has changed from diabetes to pre-diabetes. My diabetes educator told me a maximum of 209 carbs a day. I usually keep it under and make room for the 2 to 3 pieces of fruit I have a day by sticking with high fiber, low carb starches. It's slow weight loss but it all adds up and I never feel hungry. Feel free to friend me if you like. I make my food log public. Thanks for sharing!

When I began my weight loss journey, it was because I'd be diagnosed with elevated blood sugar (not diabetes, but close to it). My doctor sent me to a dietician who told me these three things.
    1. Watch your portion size (I bought a food scale).
    2. Write down everything you eat (at that time, five years ago, it was in a notebook....today it's here).
    3. Keep your total "carbs" to under 15. In her world, a "carb" was 15 grams of carbohydrates.....so total for the day was 225 grams. To make a comparison, a slice of bread is about 1 "carb," a cup of macaroni and cheese is about 3 "carbs."

To be perfectly honest with you.....I thought she was a quack. Almost five years, 60+ pounds lighter (and kept off), no diabetic or cholesterol medicines later......she wasn't!

    Good luck!

Low carb and fruit are never going to be good friends because of the amount of fructose in fruit but check out books like Neris and Indias diet and you should be ok.

I have to admit I found it really hard, Carb Flu hit me really hard and I was wiped out completely, feeling ill and generally crappy.

Coming from a nutritional stand point I'd say keep away from processed carbs but don't limit your live and raw food. You need a wide variety of live foods to get all the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy and lose weight. Doctors don't know very much about nutrition, I'd recommend finding a nutritionist, not a dietitian because dietitions are trained by the FDA and major food corporations whereas nutritionists study actual nutrition and health. Naturopaths are also a great resource. Best of luck on your journey and congrats on your fabulous progress so far!

You can eat fruit on Atkins, just not during induction phase. In the past I've done Atkins induction that gradually added back good carbs and lost lots of weight that way. Now, I'm switching back to a lower carb diet, since my sugar intake is out of control but I don't have the willpower to do induction right now. For now, I'm just trying to cap my daily carb intake at around 100g. For me personally, that allows me about 2 whole grain servings a day and a piece of fruit while allowing me to eat vegetables freely. I try to stick to lower sugar fruits that are high in fiber or antioxidants. I eat lots of strawberries, sometimes blueberries (they just cost too much to buy regularly) and I like golden delicious or fuji apples.

I have my carb goal set at 45% ( 130). It works great for me. I can still eat bread, fruit, pasta and potatoes. I just watch portion size. I bought a food scale and use it everyday.
