Hello all! I'm new to the site/forum but I've had the app on my iPhone for a while (since January). It's only the past couple of weeks that I've made a conscious effort to reduce my weight and get my running back on track (see: thevirtualrunner.org).

In fact, in all my (almost) 40 years I've never 'dieted' once or actually did what I'm doing now. I'm impressed with the results so far and I'm looking forward to getting rid of this jiggly belly...

Hello Virtual Runner. I'm not a runner, in fact I hate it, but was looking to get some tips. I ran today for a mile in a half in 16:45. I know very slow. Do you have any suggestions to make me faster without dying?

That's just over 11 mins per mile so that's not bad. You have to get the whole 'slow/fast' thing out of your head with running. It's not important. You just go at a speed that you're comfortable with and you work on it. That's why running is great because it's a selfish sport.

I'd work on endurance first and then worry about speed later. When I started running I would just run at a comfortable speed until I couldn't run anymore (a few minutes!) and then walk for 2mins and then I would run again until I couldn't take it anymore and then walk again for 2mins. I just kept doing that and I started running longer and longer.

Hey virtualrunner welcome. I am new to the site too like you, but have been tracking my consumption through the app for a couple months. I found that I love the site and app because it really tracks your nutrition too. Us near 40 and over 40 guys need to pay attention to that as I have learned. As long as you put in some work managing the site/app it will help you tremendously.

    Kimmi,

The most important thing about running is keeping your heart rate at a higher than typical level. Don't worry about the speed yet, it will come. Focus on keeping your body burning calories and fat.

  • Hello!

I am new to the community here and looking for some friends or encouragement/accountability. I am 30, a mommy of two (a 4 year old daughter and two year old son) and a runner. Well, actually, I had never even been able to run a mile but after my son was born almost two years ago a friend encouraged me to try to run a 10K and so I started running. Last summer I ran 4 half marathons and am training for my first full marathon.

My physical activity is on track and I am more physically fit than I've ever been, but my eating is what's killing me. Growing up I bounced between anorexia and binge eating, and my portion control/food issues have never fully resolved although I am in a much healthier place mentally. I stress-eat, I boredom-eat, I am total foodie... and I need accountability to overcome this and lose weight for myself and for my family.

Anyway I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself and good luck to you all on reaching your goals!
