I was diagnosed with Mono about three weeks ago. For the first two weeks I was completely out of it. I was wondering when you started to exercise again since I am getting bored with not doing any exercise also since I got Jillian Michael's dvds and I havent tried them out yet and really do and how you went about in doing it. Like did you push yourself all at first?

Thanks for your help :)

Vigorous exercise can damage your spleen when you have mono. Check in with your doctor.

I've had mono. My advice would be to take it slowly. Start by taking short walks around the block. Don't do JM. And if you feel tired, don't push through it unless your doctor clears you for exercise. You really need to take it easy until you get well, and that might take a while.

I was out of commission about a month when I had mono. And my Mom kept yelling at me that I was going to rupture my spleen.

I second all the check with your Dr comments. Any vigorous exercise can rupture your spleen. Better safe than sorry

My teenage daughter had mono about this time last year. it completely wiped her out. She slept for most of two weeks and lost a tremendous amount of strength - she couldn't even get up the stairs. Once she started coming out of it, I spent two weeks ensuring that she got solid nutrition (she was barely eating anything for those two weeks she was mostly sleeping and had lost 20 lbs. that she could ill-afford to lose!). After those two weeks, I started her doing very simple strength training exercises with a medicine ball. I found a great routine on Men's Health magazine's web site called "The Tar Heels Workout" - she did the first 6 exercises using a 6-lb. medicine ball. She did 20 reps of each of the exercises, or as many as she could if she couldn't get to 20. and went through the whole routine 3 times, resting in between as much as she needed. She did this three times per week for about four weeks, graduating to a 10 lb. ball after about the second week.

The key thing that turned her around was eating extremely nutritiously - I made sure she got a quality protein at every meal, along with plenty of fruits and vegetables. No junk, no sugar - only foods that would aid in her recovery. After that, introduce exercise very slowly.

I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck with your recovery.

Edited to add: I also agree with getting your doctor's okay for exercise - I neglected to say that my daughter was seeing the doctor frequently during this time and we didn't start her exercise until they felt it was safe to do so.

I was diagnosed with mono two weeks before my wedding (go figure!!) in 2009 -- it took my at least 6 weeks before I could do more than take a walk. Your doctor is your best source of info, tho -- it all depends on the severity of your case and your general health otherwise. Take time to get well -- it will be best in the long-term!!
