Scared of baby weight....

Hi everyone,

I know this sounds really vain but I am putting off having another baby because I am worried about putting on all the weight again. I put on 2.5 stone with my first child and it has taken me 2 years to get it off, I'm now trying to shed the last 10lbs of post marriage weight!

Obviously the last 10lbs are sooo hard to get rid of and I'm stuck at a plateau. So do I keep working at it? Or go ahead and try for the next baby and deal with the weight later?

It's just tough when I'm so close to where I want to be but feeling it's time to have another baby!

It all depends on what you want most and what your plan for your family is. I'm pregnant for the third time and I'm nowhere near my goal weight. I wasn't even able to get to my halfway goal before getting pregnant but losing the weight wasn't as important as keeping our kids close in age. As far as baby weight goes, you don't have to gain much during pregnancy. Ideally, you should only gain 25-30 pounds with one baby, almost all of which come from the baby, amniotic fluid, extra blood, etc. There's no reason to gain a significant amount of fat during pregnancy and any that you do gain should be lost through breast feeding. Make sure you eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, sugar, etc. and you should gain excessive weight. I gained about 30 pounds with each of my pregnancies and 20 of it came off in the first week or so. I also had a terrible diet so that last 10 didn't come off after the first, but I was able to lose an additional 13.5 pounds after losing the baby weight the second time.

If you want a baby, have a baby. Don't get hung up on the weight you'll gain, just do what you can to make sure you don't gain more than is necessary.

    HAVE ANOTHER BABY:blushing:
Mother of four here..the weight can come off later - there is NOTHING that beats having children and there is no better incentive to loose weight later than being healthy for them! And for your retirement......Not saying it is easy but as you can see it is never easy and with MFP maybe you wont put on as much this time...
    Go for it NOW!!:blushing:
    All the best,
    Heather
PS I'm 50 and still 'blaming' my last little bit to loose on my children - that's what they're for!!! lol:laugh:

If the weight is the only thing keeping you from going for another, just go for it. There is never a perfect time to have a baby... something could always be better. I say, don't put it off.

And... stay on MFP. I am expecting, and signed up because my husband's whole family did and I want to support them all. I put in my goal as gaining .5 lb a week, but may have to up that after I talk to my doctor again (I've only been on for a couple of weeks, see doc this week). My purpose to gain a healthy amount of weight, but not too much. I've noticed that, now I'm watching it, I'm eating better. I used to always say "Oh, I'm eating for two so I can have another cookie" but now I am going for healthier choices and smarter serving sizes and really paying attention to fat vs. carbs and protein. I will still have pregnancy weight to loose after (and the extra weight I had before getting pregnant), but it will be easier with less extra gained and having the system and habits already in place. :)
    You can do it too.

Depending on where you are in your pregnancy you may not need to gain any weight at this point, especially if you are overweight. You only need 300 extra calories in your third trimester, maybe a little extra toward the end of the second. Before that the baby is so tiny it doesn't need much in the way of nutrition so you don't need to eat extra.
