Ok, so most of you who know me know that I am suffering from a pretty bum knee. I have been training since February for this Maryland Half Marathon which is on Sunday. I am heartbroken because my knee is in pretty bad shape. It is my IT band and some torn cartilage under my knee cap. I have done PT, I am doing my stretches, taking those joint pills, using an estim machine, ice, not running, getting a sports massage and KT taped on Thursday.
Any advice? Tips? Suggestions? I won't give up and I am GOING to finish this race...I have an appt with an ortho for the next day to have my knee fully taken care of whatever it takes.
Just looking for ANY other suggestions.
I feel like I am doing everything under the sun to help it, but IDK.
Also does anyone know who else can give a corisone shot. My ortho, who suggested can't fit me in, so I called my primary care. But she isn't in til tomorrow.
SOS!

I like to push myself as much as possible and tend to ignore my injuries but I wouldn't be running anywhere if I had this kind of injury.

Sorry about your knee. Have tried a foam roller?

I was heartbroken last year when I couldn't run a half marathon due to an injury. Any chance you can get the entry fee, or even part of it, refunded? If you do the half this coming weekend, you'll do even more damage to your knee.

i have chronic knee pain.... other then rest, ice/heat alterating, and everything else your doing, the only thing i know of is making sure you're running correctly (but PT would make sure of that). I know you're super stoked for this half marathon, but don't kill your joint to run it... there is always next year. You're way too young for a knee replacement!

so sorry about your knee i know how disappointing that can be. I was going to suggest a foam roller as well it worked wonders for my it band. Also a Tiger Balm Pain Relieving Patch might help relieve some pain. Not sure about the torn cartilage not sure i would be running with that kind of injury. Good luck!

I have heard of people blowing out their knees and then not being able to run, because their knees never quite recover... I understand your pain, It would be SOOO FRUSTRATING If I hurt myself come July when I am running my 187 mile relay with my friends. BUT I also wanna be able to run again.

I KNOW its not the advice you are looking for, but seriously think about how this might effect your future in fitness... Going through weeks of rehab where your doctor says no exercising would kill me, especially since MFP has done such a remarkable job of getting me addicted. And I can tell you are the same way, or you wouldn't be wanting to run so bad come your marathon.

    -Sorry Chicka
  • I am doing this...it is not about the entry fee, every penny goes to breast cancer research and I have raised over $1,000.
I have used the foam roller...It does seem to help.

I appreciate your concern for my knee, but I am doing this...I have worked too hard and I can't give up.

    :(

Best advice is take advice from a message board with several grains of salt. So here's my advice ; ) - First, "listen to your knee", try to determine what hurts, where and when. Then have a heart to heart with a sports medicine oriented orthopedic doc giving him/her an accurate (but brief) description of what your knee has been telling you.
I agree with a previous poster - if this run is not in the cards, don't ruin future runs by going. There is always the next one.
    Good luck.
  • Thanks for your honest opinion. The pain isn't unbearable. I don't focus on it 24/7/ I did the ellpitical on Saturday and it was pain-free. Then yesterday I felt it.
I can move, squat and bend. I know that I will be in pain afterwards, but to me it is worth it to do it. Does that make me a crazy person?

Since there's no changing your mind, good luck with the run then!
