ground TURKEY vs ground BEEF

I agree with everyone else, ground turkey holds seasonings really well. But if you still don't like it, opt for beef or buffalo from your local farmers market. The cuts are naturally very lean. I've heard buffalo is leaner than chicken!0

Go for a leaner ground beef. They make some super lean varieties with only 4% fat.
This is what we use around our house!0 -
There is a wonderful recipe for cheddar turkey burgers... I will try to find it.... it is tasty and moist and low in calories if you are using low fat cheese.0

I can get 90/10 ground beef around here that has the same calories/fat as the ground turkey. It costs a little more, but I would rather have beef any day!!
Same here. I temporarily switched to ground turkey, but after I found I could get 93/7 or even 95/5 ground beef (and honestly if its on sale cheaper than ground turkey which seems to be expensive) I went back. I just think the beef tastes better, and I can do so much more with it.
I find it at Walmart & Safeway just fyi,
If you don't like ground turkey that's one thing, but you can do just as much w/ground turkey as you can with ground beef. I have mostly given up eating beef, so I eat a LOT of ground turkey and make everything from burgers to chili and meatballs to meatloaf. I have a killer turkey meatloaf recipe that I just love...and this is coming from someone that never even liked "beef" meatloaf!!0 -
I've never had ground turkey that was lacking in flavor.
Buy the all natural, organic, from humane farms and you'll do a-okay in the Turkey department. And it's still very inexpensive. You just have to ask the butcher to give it to you if you do not see it in the store.
Turkey from a factory farm is lacking in flavor and has all sorts of things in it that you don't need.0 -

I heard this idea from Jamie Oliver and did it last weekend..went to whole foods and asked the butcher to trim and grind a chuck steak for me..same price as regular ground beef but definitely leaner and cleaner...I did this because I was getting sick of the taste and dryness of ground turkey. No charge!0

I'd go 90/10 or higher before eating the ground turkey. As much as people try to dress it up, turkey has a different flavor which some of us may not enjoy.0

Love the butchers at WF! I'm only cooking for 2 and I only want to buy what I need.0 -

But the original poster's issue was that ground beef is more calories/fat than ground turkey. That's not necessarily true. If you choose to avoid beef for personal reasons, that's a different topic all together.0 -
THANKS for all the responses...this will help!0

I use extra lean ground turkey for a lot of things, and a few I just use the 96/4 groud beef. I find that if I add turkey to a recipe there isn't much difference0

Last ?? of OP was how to make ground turkey taste better. I was just trying to make the point that you can do anything with it that you can do w/beef. The poster I quoted said they could do more with ground beef...from my experience they are pretty much interchangeable..0 -
Here's a recipe I use for ground turkey, a lot, because it goes a long way, and is low in just about everything.

brown the turkey in olive oil with a small dash of dried onions, black pepper and italian or other dried mixed herb seasonings, drain and add tomato sauce and corn. preheat oven to 365 Prepare rice & beans as directed, combine all filling ingredients including cheese. Cut tops off peppers, pull out membranes and seeds, spoon about 1 cup of filling into each pepper, place open side up on a sprayed cookie sheet. Bake peppers for about 25 minutes until skins begin to brown and peppers start to get soft. If you need a tad more moisture, spoon 1tb of the tomato sauce onto each pepper before baking.
They are very filling, and only 313 calories per serving. it goes a long way.
My kids love the filling without the peppers.
in fact I'm eating it for lunch today.0 -
I prefer beef personally, I just like the taste better. Plus, unless I'm getting ground turkey BREAST, it's not worth it for me because of hte price....I just get the leaner ground beef at that point. Not all ground turkey is created equal.0

Thank goodness for this post. I almost cried after I spent all morning making turkey chili and then couldn't even finish my bowl it was so chewy and gross. I'm giving it to the dog and switching back to super lean ground beef.0
