I heard the same thing, because sugar is hard for your body to break down, so it slows your metabolism way down, thus making it harder to lose weight. I read this in one of my fitness magazines, so I'm assuming it is right. It said that natural sugar found in fruits are okay. Let me know if you find anything else out about this topic.

Well to lose weight, there has to be a calorie deficit.
it takes 3400 calories to make a pound of fat.
so cutting out sugar has some effects on your ability to lose weight
a) since sugar usually adds a significant amout of calories to food without any corresponding nutritional benefit, cutting it out helps lower calories and therefore help toward weight loss
b) there is also the issue of how the body reacts to sugar when its eaten. (because its a simple sugar and is very readily absorbed into the system) The body naturally floods the body with insulin to mop up the extra sugar, in the blood stream. When this happens, there is that "insulin surge" that gives a momentary feeling of being alert and energised, but unfortunately this does not last, as just as immediately there is a corresponding slump, and some people experience cravings for more carbohydrate, to counteract the lack of glucose in the bloodstream, which might lead to overeating and the corresponding weight gain.
So cutting out or cutting back on sugar for weight loss is more or less correct0 -
Diabetic here--eat no sugar unless it is found in other items or fruit and watch that VERY closely and I have just as much a hard time losing weight as anyone else.
To lose weight--eat in moderation, cut back on calories, and EXERCISE!0 -

They confused it (or maybe you remember it a little off). Processed sugar is TOO easy for the body to break down, it goes almost directly to the blood and becomes free glucose (blood sugar) traveling around the body, which triggers insulin release, which in turn stores that glucose as fat. It also causes the "rush" or sugar high. Followed by the inevitable crash. Because of the make up of natural sugars like those of fruit and milk, they don' t spike the blood sugar. Generally it's because the sugars in these foods are complex molecules, take longer to break down, and also the foods usually contain fiber or protein and omega 3 and 6 (complex) fatty acids, which helps delay the breakdown of the sugar. As to processed sugar slowing the metabolism down, that's false, I've read many studies on sugar, and never once seen that statement made.
That's why even though an orange may have the same amount of sugar as say a chocolate bar (I don't know if they do, I'm doing a for example thing) it's still better for you, because the sugar (along with all the other good stuff in an orange) will take longer to break down, not go right to blood, and be easier to be burned slowly by the body.

I was actually a little worried because I've been a little over on my sugars each day. My goal is 30 sugar a day, but wow I don't know how it's possible to keep that below 30 when a single apple (my morning snack) contains 18 sugar. BUT it's good to know that the sugar that comes in fruits and veggies (the "good" kind) is "ok" or better. It's not like my sugar is coming from "bad" sources. On a good day when I have a 100 calorie chocolate bar I get around 7 sugar that's NOT from fruits or other "good" sources, but otherwise it is.0 -

I don't know...I'm NO expert but I think cals are cals (bottom line)
I was reading an article in a health mag and the woman asked if she are 1 Big Macs (McD)..would she loose weight
The nutritionist said unfort. she was..thought it was extremely unhealthy...it all boils down to cals
On the other hand, I think by avoiding sugar....you would eat more fiber/protein....feel fuller longer...maybe eat less (so it would help with overall weight loss)
I think everything should be balanced...you don't want to feel too deprived etc

Mmm, have to disagree here. Cals ARE cals. But cals from simple carbs and sugars are digested much faster then complex carbs, protein, and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Which means your body throws a LOT more calories into the system all at once. And remember, when your system has too many calories to burn, it stores them. So the longer it takes to digest food, the more of a "slow burn" you get. Think of simple carbs and sugars like dry leaves, and complex foods as logs. They both burn, but for the same volume, the leaves burn up much, much faster. You want the logs, they take longer to burn, therefore the energy they produced is spaced out.0 -
