Pre and Post Workout Food

I just started C25K and a fitness routine and am really interested in suggestions for the best food to consume pre and post workout. I'm not talking about extra calories or the like, but just good food choices to replenish, energize, etc the body that's essentially within my normal daily calories (which is about 1300). I'm not working out hard enough yet to really start "eating my calories back." So, I generally go for a run, then have dinner. Or, eat dinner, then go for a run, and then come home and have some sort of snack. What would be good choices?

I drink an 8 oz glass of 1%milk with 2 Tbsp of hershey's syrup after every workout. Stops the shaking from working so hard and perks me right back up. Plus, it's only about 200 calories.
Lot of other ppl do things like protein whey shakes and the like to replenish themselves.

Does anyone else have any ideas of food to eat pre-and post- workout. Not necessarily food you do eat, but food that is nutritionally OPTIMAL to eat.0
