during strength training work tonight, I was admiring my newly acquired arm and shoulder muscles (yes I'm a geek who is in love with my new more muscular body lol)...however, I still have "underarm" flab, even though the tops of my arms and shoulders look awesome...can anyone suggest some good exercises (either machines or free weights)? I'm thinking I need to build up my triceps...? Not sure why my biceps and lats look so awesome, when my tri's are FLABBY...lol...

With the repeated statement that you cannot spot reduce here are some exercises.

If you lift weights do bench presses, they work your triceps as well. If you do body weight exercise push-ups.

    Specific triceps exercises are:

    Bench Dips http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jox1rb5krQI
Press downs (on a machine) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKy4BvdX4nQ
    Kickbacks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO81bExngMI

I do both single and double arm seated triceps extensions. Those make my triceps grow faster than any other exercise I have done in the past.

The "flab" people refer to sometimes can often be more loose skin than fat however, so doing tricep exercises can help in that department.

Jim, you're absolutely right--I am not looking to "spot reduce", I should have phrased this differently.

Take two: I want to BUILD muscle in my triceps  I have no trouble building it in my biceps and lats with the exercises I've been doing...but apparently not focusing enough on tri's...

That would be a more positive way to say it...and thanks for the links and ideas!

Thanks...I haven't lost that much weight (about 20 pounds) and it doesn't look like loose skin, just less muscular than the rest of my arms ;)

The reason I put that opening caveat there was to make sure people realize you must get rid of the fat to really see the muscle. A person could have amazing triceps, but if they are covered with enough fat they will look horrible.

The big thing is do bench presses with heavy weight. It will build triceps. The other exercises will help as well.

Thanks Jim...I totally understood why you wrote that...that's why I rephrased it.
Guess I'm gonna have to make some friends in the weight room at the gym LOL...I'm afraid to lift anything heavier than the 45 pound bar because I don't have any spotters ;)
  • dips are good for triceps
