I actually always seem to only be able to squeeze my workouts in right before dinner.
  • I like to eat either fruit or something with protein like a boiled egg or peanut butter and apples.

I don't know if I follow that rule, but I can explain it. If you eat carbs after working out, it gives your body energy to continue burning fat (not muscle) as well to continue burning calories. That argument I understand, but can't say I live by it because you can also store those carbs for energy later in the day... or eventually fat if they're not used up. Protein after a work out is fairly important. If you do strength training, it is especially important. When you work out, you are basically breaking down your muscles and protein builds them back up... thats the most simplistic way I can describe it. Therefore, if you constantly do strength training, but never eat protein, then your muscles won't grow/get lean/etc and you'd be withering away.

The good news is that most carbs made with grains (wheat bread, wheat pasta, etc) have a high amount of protein as well. Hope that helps!

I usually have a protein smoothie after I work out. I really only worry about protein after I work out, but I make my smoothies with apple juice, yogurt, frozen berries and unflavored protein powder so I am getting both protein and carbs.
