I haven't had a hot dog since I started MFP because I thought they were all terrible for you...but tonight for dinner I had three 40 calorie hot dogs (my mom found them at Wal-Mart for me...Oscar Mayer 98% fat free turkey dogs) with sauerkraut, low sodium ketchup, and onions on one bun (I rolled it out with a rolling pin super thin and divided it into two thin buns)...I had baked beans, cottage cheese, and carrots with dip...as well as a half serving of baked french fries...I didn't want to waste calories on another bun, so for the third hot dog I made a "hot dog salad"...put a little sauerkraut on my plate with some onions, cut up hot dog, and baked beans, all tossed together...it was a super yummy dinner and I felt like I had a full blown picnic without going over my calories...by the end of the day, and with exercise calories, I even had enough calories left to have some chocolate pudding...woohoo! Who knew you could eat THREE hot dogs within a healthy eating lifestyle?

Yay, I love hot dogs! They are TERRIBLE in sodium though, give me migraines. I buy Oscar Mayer's 98% fat free bologna too.

Do they taste like hot dogs or like turkey dogs? I'm always looking for something not too high in calories and low carbs--the sodium is high on these but not too bad, but do they taste like hot dogs?

I liked them...obviously they are not a perfect substitute, but I thought they were pretty good :)

Oh man, Hebrew National 98% Reduced Fat All Beef Hot Dogs...the BOMB. They taste like hot dogs! 1.5g fat, 2g carbs, and 6g protein per dawg. I admit I don't really watch sodium, I drink a ton of water and my blood pressure is in the basement. :blushing:

That's the kind my mom was looking for but Wal-Mart didn't have them tonight so she got the Oscar Mayers...very good though...the only thing I didn't like is that the turkey dogs didn't char up nicely on the grill like other hot dogs would...I like my dogs black and charred on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside...I'm weird lol

I like my hot dogs the same way, so I guess we're both weird.

I agree the Hebrew National are great. I tried the BallPark reduced fat ones and they tasted kinda like nothing. I also wrap them in a lo carb whole wheat tortilla with a little cheese and grill them on my george forman, I know it's kinda strange but they taste really good and you cut out alot of the calories from the bun

I went and bought a pack of the Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Hot Dogs today and had one for dinner fried with some Videlia onions.

It was delicious! Tasted great--thanks for getting the word about about them. Kind of high in sodium but 1 is ok for me, and a nice treat, too!

Be careful, they make both, the reduced fat ones have 120 calories and the 97% Fat Free have 45 calories. They are about the same size if not exactly.

I wanted to have 2 for dinner but blew too much sodium on lunch when I had El Pato Jalepeno Salsa with my chicken breast. :ohwell: It was either 2 hot dogs with no cheese or 1 with cheese, and you KNOW you've got to have the cheese or it ain't a dog!

I usually try to keep my sodium level at 2500 or less...it doesnt always work out that way though! I am lucky enough to have very low blood pressure and I try to be smart about the foods I eat and watch the sodium where I can. So, just be a little aware. You will be amazed at the amount of sodium in certain foods!
