Help me understand something friends on MFP ... I'm not picking at certain people but I have noticed on the forums people post that their way works blah blah blah but when you read their siggie ... it's like they've lost 1-8lbs ... out of like 50or more to lose ... not picking like I said ... but isn't that premature to to say it's working ... but I'm not an expert nor am I am here to judge or say what's best plan or whatver ... just wondering how everyone gauges their success ... so how do you know YOUR plan or lifestyle (not diet) is working?

Replies

  • I think it's more of "what works for me"...you know your plan is working when you see results.

I know this is working for me because I'm losing weight consistently and on the weeks where I don't have a loss on the scales - I know that it doesn't matter because I'm going to keep going - I don't want to give up and I know I wont - so that's how I know my plan is working for me and I'm experienced at diet loss failures!!!

Dont forget a lot of people will do something that works, lose weight, and then gain some back, so they have to restart. There are people not trying to lose, but maintain, so their weight will fluctuate, and there are people on here who are physical trainers or nutritionists who for whatever reason have gained and are trying ot lose. (I know because I have two of them as friends on here)....So dont assume that because someone hasnt lost a ton of weight that they dont know what they are talking about.

And to answer your question, I ask myself with every loss of gain, is this working for me or what??? SO I just keep moving forward and adjust as needed...

I know my plan is working cause i have a steady weight loss every week & feel great. It was'nt until i lost 10lb tho that i knew what i was doing was working, befote that i put it down to the initial weight loss you always get at the beginning of a diet :)

The first month i was convinced it was'nt working, it was only when co-workers & customers started to notice that i looked slimmer & more toned that i was happy. I guess it's different for everyone, success is'nt something that can be measured it's how you feel x

So true.... I've lost 40 lbs before, doing it the right way, becoming active and eating healthy via counting calories. I didn't use mfp, but I knew what works. Sad thing about us humans is, many times when we know the stove is hot, we still touch it. So, I got married, pregnant, ate JUNK and gained it back. But, once I knew I needed/wanted to get back in shape, I knew what I had to do. Knew a diet wouldn't work, and knew the only way to do it was just as I had before, counting my calories, measuring my food, only eating servings instead of "helpings" lol.... And, MFP is just a wonderful tool to help in doing that way. I know some people can get a little soap boxish on here, but mostly it seems I find a lot of help and care and encouragement even from people who haven't lost as much as others.

For me, it was when I lost the first stone (that's 14 lbs...)

At that point I took the time to thank my Strength training coach at the gym, because I was concentrating on weights and muscle building - I told him how much I enjoyed his workouts, and I felt that was an important part of me getting that far.

Since then I've got to my original goal, reset it 5lbs lower, and am now maintaining at that. I always encourage people to try different methods and find what works for them - every BODY is different, there is no One True Way.

I consider it to be working because I've lost almost 20 kilos, I am lifting weights so I feel stronger, I feel better about myself, I'm out enjoying activities I used to and hopefully I will be looking fitter soon as well.

I am starting to live life again not just watch it pass me by.

I know my lifestyle works because it has worked before. Yes, I gained some back, but that was because of stress/emotional crap that I had never dealt with, not the diet/lifestyle. This is a lifestyle that I can maintain. I have tried many other ways, and anything too restrictive just does not work for me.

People measure success in many different ways. Just because the signature doesn't show huge weight loss, or because they still have further to go, they have made some successes. We are all here with the same goal. We may have different degrees of that goal. We may take different routes or modes to get there, but we know whether we are moving to or away from that goal.

I have never ever lost 29lbs before. For me this is working. I have never ever ran before. I did the C25k because of this site and I ran a 5k. To me this is working. I love working out, I never said that before. I feel proud of myself and to me these are all successes.

Someone may look at my plan and say ewww I would never do that. Doesn't mean it doens't work, it's just not for them.

I don't know if that helped or not, but best wishes to you.

I know my plan is working for me because I've lost over 14 lbs in less than 2 months, and my clothes that were too tight in march are now loose on me...I can also see the difference in certain areas of my body when I look in a mirror...friends, family and co-workers are starting to notice the difference and have been commenting and giving support. I feel stronger and lighter and like I can do almost anything! Loving it!!!
